Money Management question

Is there any prefered method when wagering on a horse to win. I hear people say they like to bet a horse to win or place a lot. When doing this - is there a structure? For example - bet 1 unit to win, 2 units to place? Sorry if this is an odd question, but I am trying to learn this sport now, and I know from other sports that money management is the key to making money. so any input would be great...

Thanks.

Hey Larry;
When trying to hit winners I usually place the wager win/place.
Same bet on both. So if the horse doesn't win but places I usually get the cost of the bet back. If it does win I get the place money as well.
Just the way I have been playing it, not necessariarly the right way. I could stand some money management tips myself!

Good luck
peznt

Hi Larry. PEZ is right. Majority of the horse players will bet $10 Win and $10 Place. The purpose of the place is to insure your bet. So if your choice comes in first or second, you cash both bets. If it only comes in second, you cash the Place bet which should recover the lost money on the Win bet. Depending on how long (odds) your horse is at, you might even make money just on the Place bet. When you are starting out, just play small to get the feel of the game. Good Luck Larry.

Hi Larry. I have posted the results from the first 5 races from Woodbine last night. You can take a look at what some of the WIN/PLACE/SHOW prices paid. There were some big PLACES prices. It all depends on what comes in. Also note the higher payouts at this track as opposed to Aqueduct. Good Luck.
