New Horse Contest

I would be a big fan of us having a some type of contest AT LEAST once a month. I'm not talking about having Bet Jam sponsor it, but even if it was for pride. It could be a couple times a month or more if any people would be interested. Maybe Jack would throw in some CM t-shirts or underwear for the top spot. The Breeders Cup doesn't really show handicapping abilities, it shows that people are looking for a long one to hit. (history also shows this) Lets hear some feedback if you would be interested. Also, what would be the format. Thanks, WILDKAT

I would love to do that. I am terrible at horse handicapping though. But I will play for pride. We just need to find someone who has time to do the scoring.

Lloyd: I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man.

I would be happy to help with scoring but I'm usually not around during the days. Around most nights and every morning though

I am all for doing the contests again and can help out some weekends with the results. However, I do disagree with WildKat that the Breeders Cup doesn't show handicapping skills. Granted, if a guy was to simply pick huge longshots and happen to hit a couple that would be good enough to win a contest, it doesnt mean he is the best handicapper. But that did not happen. This years winner, Northstars, was clearly the best handicapper with 5 wins and 9 total in the money out of 14 races. I think he did a great job handicapping some very tough races, especially on Saturday.

To me, the key thing to running a handicapping contest is that everyone is handicapping the same races. I have participated in many online handicapping contests and all of them were run in this manner where you given certain races to handicap and the idea is to pick the winner, period!

One of the problems I remember having when we did the contests before was everyone was given $500 play money to start and could wager whatever they want on any race. Many guys were placing huge show bets on big favorites over and over just to build their bankroll in hopes of winning. Now to me, that does not show any handicapping skills, but this is what a lot will do if we run a contest similar to that. The only way to run a true handicapping contest is to run one similar to what we just did with the Breeders Cup. Everyone has to wager the same wager on the same races. Plus its the easiest way to keep track of things and handle the results.

I suggest we do either a Friday-Sunday or just Saturday and Sunday contest and select either 2 or 3 tracks( 1 track each day) and select a certain number of races at each track that day and do it the same way we did the Breeders Cup with a mythical $2 WPS wager with the one having the most at the end of the weekend being the winner.

For example, this weekend we could do Churchill Downs races 6-10 on Saturday and Aqueduct races 5-9 on Sunday. Each weekend we could pick different tracks to handicap. Again, this is just my suggestion as I feel its the best way to run a handicapping contest in determining the best handicapper.

Just my 2 cents worth...

WW. I didn't mean that you couldn't handicapp the Breeders Cup, it's just that if you know anything about the history of the Breeders Cup you know that lots of bombs come in. Therefore, you have alot better chance at getting great value and better payoffs at the BC as opposed to other races. Breeders Cup racing is just a very special day of racing like no other.
