New to horse racing, need some advice.

I just started getting into horse racing these past 3 months. Im not that knowledgable as some of you are, but im hoping one day i can become good a capping horses myself. Are there ay sites that explains some of the termanology and types of bets? Im sure i could google some, but just thought id ask the experts for some of their personal favorites (sites). Thanks for the hard work you guys put in, much appreciated.

thanks guys. ive heard good things about this board especially about smooth & wabash. One question...at the end of the race they post the winnings for the $2 exacta, $2 trifecta, $2 daily double, etc.. Well say i only wager $1, will i get half of what they post?

YES.....but keep in mind that offshores only pay exotics up to 250 to 1. So if the exactor paid $1000 on track, you should get $500 for a $1 bet offshore but the limits kick in and you will only get $250.

Skippy is correct that most offshore betting places restrict the payouts for exotic plays. Some pay up to 300-1. The one I use pays full track odds and also gives a 7% rebate on all bets placed. It is the best one I have found to bet the horses on. So shop around when trying to find a place to bet.

Im not to familair with what you mean by 'offshore.' Are you talking about where they're located?

Offshores are online gaming sites that have NO affiliation with the actual track(s) you are betting on, therefore they do not have the same handles as the track(s) themselves and thus cannot pay you track odds. Some tracks offer online betting on their own sites, meaning your bet will actually go into the track pools, therefore, you will get actual track payouts.

If you follow one or two tracks, then you should set up an account with THEM to get the best payouts. If you have no favorite tracks, then offshore is your best option in the sense that you don't have your money tied up in different accounts. The big advantage of offshores is that the money in your account can be used to play sports, horses, casinos etc. Of course with advantages, there are also disadvantages.

For me personally, I prefer to play at an "off track betting parlor" where my bet is added to the pools at the actual track, so if I get lucky, I will get track payouts. My biggest on track payout (Win 3) was $4100 (I had the only ticket so I got the entire pool). If I had bet that with an offshore, I would've only gotten $250.

If you are only so inclined to play Win Place Show and Exactors, then offshores are great because you very seldom get payouts exceeding 250 - 1. If you prefer the Win 3, Win 4, triactors and superfectas, then you could be disappointed.

another newbie

I'm also a newbie to cappersmall, and was wondering about the format used in many posts.

For example, from Vincenzo's post today:
Quote:
BELMONT

6TH 8-9
--------------
ARLINGTON

8TH 1-3-5
----------------
MONMOUTH

6TH 7-8

8TH 1-3-5
---------------------
I know "6TH 8-9" means the 8 and 9 horses in the 6th race, but does this mean bet them only to win, ATB, exotics, etc?

Thanks.

Edit: P.S. no relation to RestoreTheROAR.

If you are new, just start with Win and Place bets. Of course the WIN bet would pay more than the PLACE bet. You play the PLACE as insurance for your WIN. So if you horse comes in second, the PLACE bet usually is enough to cover the loss on the WIN. It is NOT worthwhile playing the SHOW unless you are laying down big money as typically, SHOW will pay between $3 and $4. As you get more comfortable, then progress to the exotics where bigger payouts are available. If there is a track near where you live, go to their site and just browse at the payouts for the races the last few days/weeks or so just to get a feel of what kind of returns the WPS and the exotics can fetch.
