Preakness / Belmont questions

I was thinking about doing an all over all exacta with a few friends for the Belmont. We would basically hope a long shot shows up. Does anyone know what the exacta paid for the preakness or the Kentucky durby? Is the all over all a bad bet?

Thanks,
Acidflea

I think the Preakness exactor paid around $300.

The answer is YES and NO.

Online books only pay up to 250-1 whereas on track could pay much much more if you are hoping for longshots to come in 1st and 2nd.

If there are 12 horses in the race, the total combinations you would need to bet is 12 X 11 = 132. So $1 exactors will cost you $132 and $2 exactors will cost you $264. Now in order for you to just break even, the exactor will have to pay $264 on a $2 bet. Anything less, you will lose. How much you lose will depend on what comes in. If its 2 huge longshots, you can make some money except the online books only pay 250-1.

I would recommend you cutting down the number of horses. If you pick 6 horses, it would only be 6 X 5 = 30 combinations. If you lose, you only lose $30. Of course you can do whatever you like, so GOOD LUCK Flea.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask.

The Preakness paid $152 for a $2 bet. I forget what the exact amount the Derby paid, but it was huge... As Skippy said, its really not worth betting it that way especially if you are hoping for a huge payout since most offshore books only pay up to 300-1 odds for exotic payouts. You are looking at betting arounfd $150 to make 300, bot really a good investment under the circumstances. There is one that pays full odds, but not sure if I can mention it here. If you bet with TVG, they will pay out full track odds also.

I will probably do what I did in the Preakness and Derby and pick 5 horses and put them in an exacta box costing $40. I missed the Derby, but hit the Preakness doing this.

I would be making the wager at an OTB here in town. When you choose the 5 horses do you actually pick who you think will win the race or do you just put in your favorite long shots to try to make a lot of cash?

When i go to the otb normally I really dont bet the longshots like i am thinking here. I just thought it would be worth a shot since there are so many horses that are 20-1 and 50-1.

Thanks for the replys skippy and wabash...

I will have Afleet Alex and Giacomo for sure among my 5... Have not even looked at the PPs yet, so not sure my other 3 will be yet.

If you go to OTB, it will pay track odds. The best thing to do is to pick out 5 or 6 horses that you think has a legitimate shot at winning regardless of their odds and tie them together in an exactor box and hope for the longshots to come in first and second or at least first. A lot of the 20-1 and 30-1 are inflated because of the heavy betting on the favorite(s) when they should really be around 15-1 and 20-1. It is highly unlikely that a 99-1 shot will win the race, but it could finish second. If an upset is to occur, it would likely be a medium shot that pulls it off.

Its like the NBA playoffs, you wouldn't bet the 8th seed in either conference to win the championship because it is highly unlikely to happen. Both top seeds are out and the active teams are both 2nd seeds.
