Question on how Show and Place works

I feel dumb for asking this, but just want to be sure.

If I bet on a horse to Place and that horse actually comes in First, what would I win ? $8 or $5 ?

If you bet a horse to place you always get the middle payout, in your example $5. If you bet to show you get the 3rd payout no matter which of the 3 top positions the horse finishes in.
