Sleeper In Derby Getting Ready

Charitable Man arrives at Keeneland

Unbeaten Kentucky Derby (G1) hopeful CHARITABLE MAN (Lemon Drop Kid) arrived at Keeneland Monday night after shipping from his winter base at Palm Meadows in Florida, and the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained colt took a tour of Keeneland's main track on Tuesday morning, galloping 1 1/4 miles over the Polytrack under exercise rider Pat Correa. Unraced since his one-length victory in the Futurity S. (G2) in mid-September, Charitable Man will receive his lone prep for the Kentucky Derby (G1) in the Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 11.

"He had a saucer fracture of a shin," assistant trainer Neil McLaughlin explained of the lengthy layoff. "When was started back (this year), we knew everything would have to go perfect and so far everything has. He has not missed a day of training and every work we had planned he made every time."

Charitable Man returned to the worktab on February 13 and has recorded seven works at Palm Meadows, most recently drilling five furlongs in a bullet :59 4/5 last Saturday. It was the fastest of 42 at the distance.

"He will have one breeze (at Keeneland) before the Blue Grass, probably Sunday," McLaughlin said.

Regular rider Alan Garcia, who piloted Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor) to an upset in Saturday's U.A.E. Derby (UAE-G2), will retain the mount aboard Charitable Man in the Blue Grass.

BET HIM NOW STILL IN FUTURES AT 35-1 UNTIL HE WINS BLUEGRASS
THEN HE SHOULD DROP IN ODDS FAST

This horse is definitely a sleeper, but if I want him to win the Derby, I'd rather see him just run a good race and not necessarily win in the Blue Grass. The Blue Grass will have a very good field and Charitable Man would have to run a pretty big race to win it. That would be asking a lot from a colt making his first start in almost 7 months and only 3rd total, and then expecting him to come back 4 weeks later and have to run the biggest race of his life. This colt definitely has talent. The 3rd place finisher in the Futurity won by Charitable Man in his last start was Friesan Fire, who is one of the leading Derby contenders right now. Good future bet at 35-1...
