Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn...

The $250K Southwest Stakes, the first of 2 preps at Oaklawn for the Arkansas Derby, will be run today featuring Lawyer Ron. The morning odds are 8-5 and will probably even money or less by post time . This horse has been unbeatable recently winning his last 3 races by a combined 27 1/2 lengths. It took 6 races before he finally broke his maiden last year on a sloppy track at Keeneland, then had a 3rd and a 4th place finish before ending the year winning twice and then won his first race as a 3 year old last month in the grade 3 Risen Star winning by over 8 lengths. The thing to note about this horse is all 4 of his wins have been on the dirt and those are the only 4 races he has run on the dirt. He did run 2 races on the polytrack at Turfway last fall, but that is a different surface than a normal dirt track. All of his other races were on the turf. He has run 11 times with 4 wins. If this horse continues to improve like he has, he will be very tough to beat in the Derby.

If you are looking to beat Lawyer Ron today, you may want to try the #5 Music School. This 3 year old colt , who is sired by A.P. Indy, is 2 for 2 so far winning his first race last June at Churchill and then with 1st time Lasix, stretched out to a mile 3 weeks ago and won an Optional Claimer at Oaklawn improving his beyer figure by 15 points. If Lawyer Ron slips at all today, look for Music School to win this one. Morning odds are 3-1. Assuming the odds on Lawyer Ron will be less than even money, I will be playing Music School to win the Southwest Stakes today.
