A True Champion

If anyone had their doubts about Afleet Alex, those doubs should have been put to bed yesterday. Not only did Alex easaily blow the field away, but did it after going to his knees at the enterance of the stretch.

As some of you know, I have been a huge Alex fan since I get personally involved with some of his connections. I thought he should have won the Derby, but the Derby has turned into a 20 horse stampeed. The Preakness and Belmont are more legitimate tests. I fully expect Alex to easily win the Belmont. These is not much this horse can not do.

Alex's real tests will come later on this year, when he runs against older company. This years three year old crop is not outstanding, by any stretch. To see how good Alex will be, races like the Breeders Cup, the Santa Anita Handicap, the Arlington Million, and others need to be entered. These races will determine Alex's place in history. Yesterday determined Alex's heart, which to no one's surprise, is as big as his namesakes heart was.

I agree, Afleet Alex ran a super race. But the moniker of "Champion" is a bit premature. A true champion is one who can persevere against all comers, to consistently perform well. Remember Super Bowl MVPs like Desmond Howard and Larry Brown? Where are they now? If Afleet Alex is a champion, he will be honored as such with the year end awards. To call him a champion in May is premature because the 3 yr old season is justing getting into full swing and unforeseen circumstances may occur such as injuries, Heaven forbid.

Perhaps I should have added the words "Heart of a Champion." I think that the fact that he runs all distances, in all climates, on any track in the country indicates that he will be something special. And he certainly is a "Money" horse.
