We would love to hear their insight of what they are thinking. It is telling. Don't tell Nick Watney this, but he should contend in Phoenix. He didn't hit the ball well at Pebble but putted much better. When he goes back to his regular ball striking with that improved putting, he should be right in the mix with mickelson, holmes and kaymer

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF PICKING GOLF WINNERS
1. CLOSER with CHARACTER. Certain guys see the finish line and cross it and others are destined for second place.
2. RELAXED CONFIDENCE, FOCUS and a HUNGER to win. It's a mental game and their mind has to be in the right frame with a determination and focus. As Harry Vardon said: "To play well you must feel tranquil and at peace. I have never been troubled by nerves in golf because I felt I had nothing to lose and everything to gain."
3. COURSE. Does the course layout favor the strengths of the golfer and does it expose their weaknesses. Previous form can change immediately for those who feel comfortable on a course and its greens.

I don't know any professional golfers. I get my insights on themselves based on their interviews. I read and watch a lot.

Steve Stricker said he won't play in this tourney now nor will he play at Honda. He will be back in two weeks at Doral WGC event where i expect him and Ogilvy to battle with Furyk behind them.

Don't worry about Stricker's performance in matchplay. That was expected after the win. Look at Dustin Johnson too. Jimenez lost after his win as well.

Keep Watney in mind for a top five next week in Phoenix, especially if he makes it to the third round by beating Westwood. I hope he loses tomorrow so he doesn't get too tired.

Here is hoping Watney loses soon so he's not burned out for next week. Another tidbit is that he supposedly just got engaged and is in a good spot. He supposedly wasn't with this woman and when they got back together, he won right after that. Not sure if that wast last year's buick or new orleans, but I think it was his first one in new orleans.
Phil is the favorite next week but watney is putting better than he was earlier in the year and should contend as long as he doesn't have to play six matches. Hopefully, he will get knocked out by Saturday morning.

Remember what I said about Watney's putting, he took a step back today.

I said I thought Phil would win at Pebble or here. Since he didn't win Pebble, I think it will be here. But he isn't any value at 8-1. Wait for them to tee off and his odds can go to double digits after the first round.

I think he will come back more relaxed off his family vacation. It's like starting over. He won't have to deal with groovegate and I think he was trying to hard and getting away and relaxing might be the cure. Last year, he struggled before winning at LA. That was when Tiger came out and announced he was coming back to play matchplay. Now that tiger has come out with his stuff, Phil gets motivated to move up the ladder.

How can you ignore JB Holmes, this is the only course he wins at and he is playing the best golf of his career. Should be right there at the end, Definitely a guy to play in matchups. I saw one with him and Poulter. Take Holmes. Poulter will be tired.

Not sure Ogilivy has his game back yet. He will need some more practice time and higher stage to excel. This week is a stepping stone to that.

I expect Villegas to be gassed but to be solid, building confidence off of matchplay. I have a tournament in mind for him where I think he will finish in the top 5 with a great chance to win. Not going to spill the beans on that one yet.

Allenby is an enigma but has a top finish in this course a decade ago. Probably needs a course where scores 10 under par is the winner. I have one in mind coming up. But he is always a risk.

We will see how Martin Kaymer does in the US with his renewed confidence. Expect him to play better than matchplay as he getting his footing in this country. Just a matter of time with the German to feel comfortable playing here.

Zach Johnson had a disaster at Sony when he had the lead and was about to take command. He faltered and this will be his first full tourney since then. Looking for a solid performance to build up for some course he will like in March and April.

Nick Watney is hitting the ball well and should have some confidence from beating westwood. still not consistent with putter but it is a matter of time he wins in the next couple of months.

Looking for Steve Marino to continue to improve. When he gets against weaker field, he should prevail, possibly in April in New Orleans.

I am watching lucas glover to see his game improve before he plays courses that suit him in March.

I recall he played there decently last year, but he couldn't get it close enough to the hole or make any putts. That came right after winning, however, so it is tough to follow up.
Expecting a top 10 for him. He had to be rusty for match play since he hadn't played since Hawaii. Looking for him to win in March or April on three courses I have in mind. I think he is motivated after the way he closed that second round at the Sony when he took a triple bogey at 17. He might have won that tournament if not for that shot. He never recovered. THe same thing happened to him at Quail Hollow last year and he came back a few tournaments later and won
