Argument with a Friend, what do you think?
Basically the argument was which is more important to start a team, a young ace or a young franchise positional player? We argued both sides and we couldnt really come up with a definitive answer and we both were kind of on the fence. He was leaning towards young ace such as Jimenez, Strasburg or Lincecum, who is in there every 5 days. I leaned towards starting a team with the everyday franchise bat ie Pujols, Arod, Hanley, Mauer. What do you think? Starting a team an ace or franchise bat?

It's an interesting debate. Without thinking to much having an Albert Pujols type who plays every day probably does it for me.
That being said one great offensive player doesn't necessarily bring wins while a great starter can almost bring wins by themselves but of course only once every 5 days good question

I would take a shut down #1 starter that is gonna give you 25+ quality starts per season

I'd rather have the starter. I figure if a starter can give you 32 starts and 25 of those quality obviously that means you have 25 games from one player that you could (should) win.
A guy like Pujols could go 3-3 with 2 HR's and 3 RBI every game and it still not be enough if you lose 12-3. But either way you can't win with just one ace starter and just one awesome hitter in the lineup. |
