Baseball lineup question

Why do some games have the pitcher in the lineup to bat and others, such as the Min/Balt. game, have the pitchers batting? You would think that you would never want the pitcher to bat unless he had a good average against the opposing pitcher.

seriously? AL teams use a DH or a designated hitter which is player who bats for the pitcher. Teams in the NL do not use the DH, thus pitcher must bat
