Big Hurt retiring: Thomas calls it quits

Two-time American League MVP Frank Thomas, one of the most feared hitters on the Chicago White Sox, is retiring after playing 19 years in the majors. The team has called a press conference for noon (et) on Friday.

Thomas was in town Thursday to receive lifetime achievement recognition from the Comcast SportsNet Sports Awards.

"It's something I've had a lot of time to think about over 14 months," Thomas told CSN Chicago. "It's time."

A five-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger award winner, Thomas spent 16 seasons with the White Sox (1990-2005) before finishing up in Toronto and Oakland. He compiled a .301 batting average with 521 homers and 1,704 RBI, but couldn't land on a team last season.

The burly 6-foot-5 Thomas played primarily as a designated hitter and also had 2,468 hits and 1,667 walks. He'll become eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.

"In my heart I know I can still play, but it's not there anymore," Thomas told CSN Chicago. "I'm 41-years-old. The passion is not there to play any more."

Thomas won back-to-back AL MVP honors in 1993 and '94.

Guy was a solid hitter. He may end up in Cooperstown, but I agree he should've just made it official last year. Either way, what a beast he was in his prime.
