Biggest hard luck pitcher in baseball has to be

Matt Cain

the guy dominates year after year it seems but always has a losing record.

Who else has no luck?

Nomar Garciaparra extremely talented IMO but had a terrible run with injuries. Unlucky as he's pretty fit.

Millwood is a candidate for this year.

Very true Dr. Jack, I remember hearing that Cain's 2007 season:

200 IP 173 H 7W-16L 3.64 ERA

was considered by those who rank such things, the unluckiest pitching season in modern baseball. After considering low run support, poor defense played behind him and lackluster bullpen support of not only leads he left to them (turning wins into no-decisions or loses) but also with respect to runners left on by him thus adversely affecting his ERA.

I really feel for the guy, especially since there is no end in sight for his buzzards luck

Hard Luck:

Most of the American League Pitchers during interleague,

NL-- 6 for 28, 7 RBI

AL-- 2 for 27, 0 RBI

guy might dominate but until he learns to pitch this will happen over and over to him.

He doesnt throw to contact and ends up with 100 pitches by the 5th inning every single game.

Reason guys like Halliday get 18 wins or more is because they go into the 8th inning. Hard to get that many wins when you never go past the 6th inining

While its true he is not a Roy Halladay, his problem isn't really getting deep into games. The last 3 years he's been over 200 innings and had an average start of 6.5 innings (well above the league average). He could definitely cut down on the walks, but he does pitch to contact. He really needs some run support more than anything.

Cain pitched a beaut last night, sweet 1 hitter. The Giants even scored a run in the 1st after 2 batters, he looked shocked

Definitely Oswalt & Cain for the past few years. I'd say Fister & Millwood should be in the conversation for this year as well. Fister has a 2.03 ERA in 9 starts...but only 3 wins. Poor Millwood has 11 starts & a 3.89 ERA (in the AL mind you) and not a single win?? There are 20+ other starters with higher ERA's who have AT LEAST 4 wins on their resume. I think an under the radar hard-luck guy so far is Jamie Garcia of the Cards. The guy has a 1.14 ERA in 9 starts...1.14 with that loaded Cards lineup to support him....& he's merely 4-2. ...Here's my "blast from the past" nominee...Sid Fernandez of the late 80s/early 90s Mets. The guy seemed to get NDs all the time. From 85 thru 93 in 9 seasons he had a 3.10 ERA in 235 starts. Remember, for the most part, that was the Dykstra, Backman, Hernandez, Strawberry, Carter crew that put up a bunch of runs. So you would think what...130-140 wins?? Nope. 92!?!
