The Bit Hit - 7.26.10

With the acquisition of SP Dan Haren, the Angels have made their pitching staff that much better. At least that's what this trade was supposed to do. Considering what they had to give up to get him, it's a clear indication that these guys are making a playoff push.

Tonight that push begins, as Haren (7-8, 4.60) makes his Angels debut against the visiting Boston Red Sox, opposite starter Clay Buchholz (10-5, 2.81). Numbers will tell you one thing, but I feel Haren is better than his numbers suggest. It's gotta be tough for a lot of these "ace" pitchers to motivate themselves to greatness when they play on garbage teams. Moving to a legitimate contender (LAA is 7 games behind division-leading Texas) may help to cure that problem. What he'll also need to work on is keeping the ball in the yard, as he's given up 23 HR (T-2nd most in the majors behind former teammate Rodrigo Lopez's 24). What makes Haren great is his ability to strike guys out (141 on the year and counting). Boston has a notoriously patient and smart hitting lineup, so this is a very intriguing matchup.

I'm taking Under 8 (-120) for $5 on this one.

Despite the Angels' garbage bullpen costing me the over, it's still a good profitable day
