Pittsburgh dropped a 2-1 contest Wednesday night in Toronto and now sits just a game above .500 for the season. The Pirates are now 7-7 against the American League this season and searching for its first series win in a Junior Circuit park since 2003. Shockingly enough, the club is currently the only NL Central team with at least seven wins against the AL. Tonight's contest is likely to be a close contest, as the squad has played six straight games decided by two runs or less. Pittsburgh is 19-19 versus winning teams this year.
Pirates starting pitcher Jeff Karstens has posted a 1.31 ERA in five starts this month, trailing only three pitchers in the Majors with a better ERA heading into the final day of June. Opponents are also hitting just .183 against him this month. The right-hander is set to make his ninth road appearance (seventh start), bringing in an even 2-2 record and 3.41 ERA. Karstens has enjoyed pitching under the lights this season, posting a 4-0 mark and 1.84 ERA in 10 nighttime outings (eight starts), issuing just 12 walks in 53 2/3 innings. In four career starts versus the Blue Jays, he has tallied a 2-0 record and 3.71 ERA, including a 1-0 mark and 4.82 ERA in two outings at the Rogers Centre.
