Chipper Jones to the DL

Chipper Jones has played for nearly two months with a torn meniscus in his right knee, but the pain has gotten to the point where he can’t manage it any longer.

The Braves placed Jones on the disabled list Saturday and he returned to Atlanta to undergo arthroscopic surgery scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. The Braves recalled infielder Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Gwinnett. Jones will miss the final two games of the series with the Philadelphia Phillies and will be unavailable to play in Tuesday’s All-Star game. He was selected to the team for the seventh time, this time by player vote, but will not make the trip to Phoenix.

Jones will take advantage of four days of the All-Star break toward his recovery time. Jones said he hopes to miss only two to three weeks recovering from surgery.

“I just didn’t want to play through it all summer and have something go wrong in September and have to miss the playoffs,” Jones said Saturday in a text message. “It’s killing me to hit right-handed, so we decided to play (Friday) night, then get it done today.”

Jones went 2-for-3 against the right-handed Roy Halladay on Friday night. But with left-handers Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels scheduled to pitch for the Phillies Saturday and Sunday, the Braves decided he should go ahead with the surgery Saturday.

Jones acknowledged after Friday night’s game against the Phillies that his right knee is not improving and he was considering missing the All-Star break because of it, possibly to undergo arthroscopic surgery.

Julio Lugo is in the starting lineup at third today

They should rest him and platoon him as much as possible to keep him healthy for one more postseason run.
