Weekend Outlook
August 11, 2017

Chicago Cubs (59-54) at Arizona (64-50)
Scheduled rotation: Lackey (9-9) vs. Walker (6-5), Lester (8-6) vs. Corbin (8-11), Arrieta (11-8) vs. Godley (5-4)
Series price: Cubs -125, Diamondbacks -105

The Cubs have lost their past three series after it appeared they were on the right track to winning the NL Central. The Cubs had won 14 of their first 17 games since the break, but the Diamondbacks fought back at Wrigley Field to win the final two of a three game set. The the Nationals took two of three and then they lost two of three to start a road trip in San Francisco. Still, the Cubs have won 12 of their last 15 on the road. The Diamondbacks come off two losses to the Dodgers, which was kind of surprising since Arizona is 41-20 in their last 61 at Chase Field. The Cubs have won nine of the past 13 meetings.

San Diego (50-64) at L.A. Dodgers (81-33)
Scheduled rotation: Richard (5-12) vs. Hill (8-4), Chacin (11-8) vs. Ryu (4-6), Perdomo (6-6) vs. Maeda (10-4)
Series price: Dodgers -700, Padres +500

These Dodgers are amazing and they deserve to be a massive -700 favorite to win this series at Station Casinos sports books. They're 46-8 over their past 54 games. They have the best record in baseball, most money won (+31.3 units), best starting pitching and best relievers. The Dodgers +1.8 margin of victory is also the best in baseball. They've also won 51 of the past 74 meetings against the Padres who come in losing six of their last eight.. The Dodgers have won seven of nine against them this season.

San Francisco (46-70) at Washington (68-45)
Scheduled rotation: Stratton (0-2) vs. Jackson (2-2), Samardzija (7-11) vs. Scherzer (12-5), Moore (3-12) vs. Strasburg (10-3)
Series price: Nationals -400, Giants +300

Both teams come in winning four of their last five and both teams come in having won two of three from the Cubs in the last week. The Nationals get some good news that Stephen Strasburg is back, but it will still be interesting to see how he fares on Sunday. They can't win it all without him. Washington swept the Giants at AT&T Park in May. They won all three by at least two runs and two of the games stayed Under the total which has been a common theme between these two. The Under is 16-4-1 in the past 21 meetings. Something to think about for Friday's Game 1 is that the Giants are 13-23 in the first game of a series this season and the Nationals are 23-14.

Colorado (65-49) at Miami (53-60)
Scheduled rotation: Gray (4-2) vs. Urena (10-5), Hoffman (6-3) vs. Nicolino (0-1), Marquez (9-4) vs. Worley (2-2)
Series price: Rockies -125, Marlins -105

The Rockies come out firing in the first game of a series this season by going 24-12. It's the main reason why the Rockies are +18.1 units on the season. Their pitching has been quite good with the bullpen actually shutting things down at Coors Field like never seen before. Greg Holland has made the biggest difference. They get high totals because of the altitude in Denver, but the number has been too big all season. Colorado is 60-48-6 to the Under this season, including their last three games. This will be the first meeting this season. Miami comes off losing three of four at Washington. The Rockies are currently on a 6-18 run in their last 24 road games.

Boston at N.Y. Yankees (60-53)
Scheduled rotation: Rodriguez (4-3) vs. Garcia (5-8), Pomeranz (11-4) vs. Severino (9-4), Sale (14-4) vs. TBA
Series price: Yankees -115, Red Sox -115

Boston is smoking hot now riding an eight game win streak, but they've only won three in the past 12 meetings with the Yankees. Boston has a 4.5-game lead in the AL East over the Yankees. The Yankees had spent 62 days in first this season, but the last time was July 31. Since then it's been all Red Sox and Aaron Judge has dropped off his first-half pace considerably. The league is catching up with him. Once a triple-crown leader, he's now batting .294 and struck out 149 times in 476 at-bats. Starlin Castro and Matt Holliday are both on the 10-day disabled list. Eight of the past 11 meetings have stayed Under.

Minnesota (57-56) at Detroit (52-62)
Scheduled rotation: Gibson (6-9) vs. Sanchez (3-2), Berrios (10-5) vs. Zimmermann (7-9), Santana (12-7) vs. Boyd (5-6)
Series price: Tigers -125, Twins +105

The Twins got themselves four games under .500 thanks to a lousy 3-9 run shortly after the All-Star break. They traded their closer and and signed Bartolo Colon for some reason. But just when we thought they were finally dead after thrilling us all summer as the underdog that could, there is still a heart beating. They've won five straight and Brian Dozier's bat has heated up just like it did in the second-half last season. They're now one game over .500 and face the Tigers who gave up long ago. The road is where most their success has been, going 30-23. However, history hasn't been kind to Minnesota in this battle. Detroit is 21-7 in the past 28 meetings.

Houston (71-43) at Texas (54-59)
Scheduled rotation: Morton (9-4) vs. Hamels (6-1), Fiers (7-6) vs. TBA, Keuchel (9-2) vs. Cashner (7-8)
Series price: Astros -145, Rangers +115

The Astros have been stumbling since the All-Star break going 11-14. Their latest series was the worst product Houston has displayed all season as they got swept on the south side by the White Sox. Is this the end of the Astros? Dallas Keuchel just lost to the White Sox. I expect them to rebound at some point, but you knew it would happen. They're bored right now witha 13 game lead in the AL West. Houston has taken seven of 10 from Texas this season improving their 35-75 record in the past 110 meetings. The Astros have been at their best on the road averaging seven runs a game. They've gone 38-17 in their last 55 road games and have gone 34-16-5 to the Over. That's a nice combo to play on this weekend. If one thing happens the other is more likely.

MLB notebook: Jeter-led group reportedly buys Marlins
August 11, 2017

Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria reached an agreement to sell the team to a group headed by former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter for $1.2 billion, multiple outlets reported on Friday.

The club has not confirmed the reports, although ESPN -- citing an undisclosed source -- said the deal is likely to be announced "in the coming days."

Financier Bruce Sherman will hold the controlling interest and plans for Jeter to be the team's chief executive officer, the Miami Herald reported. Jeter reportedly is investing approximately $25 million of his own money.

The $1.2 billion price tag of the sale is the second-highest in a history for a Major League Baseball team, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers' $2 billion sale in 2012.

--Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is expected to be sidelined a minimum of four weeks with a hamstring injury, the team announced.

Contreras sustained the injury during Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants. The Cubs are calling the injury a "moderate" strain for Contreras, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list and will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks.

The 25-year-old Contreras pulled up lame just a few feet from first base after hitting a grounder in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 3-1 loss. He remained on the ground for a few minutes before being helped off the field.

Contreras is hitting .274 with 21 homers and 70 RBIs in 102 games this season. He was batting .311 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs since the All-Star break.

--The New York Yankees placed left-handed starting pitcher CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation.

Sabathia, 37, underwent an MRI exam on his knee Wednesday in New York, but the test revealed no new damage. The former Cy Young Award winner will miss Sunday's scheduled start against the Boston Red Sox.

"When you have a guy that has a banged-up knee, you worry that there's more damage," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Sunday opposite Boston's Chris Sale.

--The Oakland Athletics recalled recently acquired outfielder Boog Powell from Triple-A Nashville.

The Athletics also recalled right-hander Michael Brady from Nashville while optioning outfielders Jaycob Brugman and Mark Canha to the same club.

Powell was acquired on Sunday in the deal that sent All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso to the Seattle Mariners. The 24-year-old had a major league stint with the Mariners earlier this season but batted just .194 in 23 games.

Powell hit .340 in 58 games at Triple-A Tacoma prior to the trade. The left-handed hitter was 4-for-16 in three games for Nashville.

--The Chicago White Sox acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for international signing bonus pool money.

Chicago also recalled right-hander Reynaldo Lopez from Triple-A Charlotte to start Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The White Sox also outrighted left-hander David Holmberg to Charlotte.

Burr, 23, went 2-2 with a 1.89 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 39 minor league appearances between Single-A Kane County and Single-A Visalia this season. He was Arizona's fifth-round pick in the 2015 amateur draft.

Lopez, 23, is 6-7 with a 3.79 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 22 starts with Charlotte this season and will wear No. 40 with the White Sox. The 26-year-old Holmberg went 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 33 games (six starts) with Chicago in 2017.

LEADING OFF: Martinez, Pudge tributes, Baker nears Bochy
August 11, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

CATCH HIM IF YOU CAN

Dusty Baker of the Nationals has posted 1,834 wins as a major league manager, one behind Bruce Bochy of San Francisco. Baker can even the tally when Washington hosts the Giants, a day after their series opener was rained out.

''We enjoy our battles and being competitive against each other,'' Bochy said.

EDGAR'S ELEVEN

Former Mariners star and current Seattle hitting coach Edgar Martinez will have his No. 11 retired by the team before it plays the Angels at Safeco Field. Martinez spent all 18 of his major league seasons with the Mariners. He hit .312 with a .418 on-base percentage, with 309 home runs and 1,219 RBIs. Martinez will be the second Seattle to have his number retired, joining Ken Griffey Jr. and his No. 24.

PUDGE'S PRIME

Ivan Rodriguez is set to have his No. 7 retired before Texas hosts Houston. The tribute comes two weeks after the star catcher was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Only two others who wore Texas jerseys have had their numbers retired - pitcher Nolan Ryan's 34 and manager Johnny Oates' 26.

HOT HOT HOT

The AL East-leading Red Sox and runner-up New York both start streaking pitchers at Yankee Stadium. Luis Severino has won four straight starts and is unbeaten in his last six outings for the Yankees, while Boston lefty Drew Pomeranz is 5-0 in his last eight starts.

WHAT NEXT?

The Red Sox expect to decide the next step for David Price, who hasn't pitched since July 22 because of inflammation in his left elbow. Price began the season on the DL because of his elbow, was activated May 29 and went 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts.

Saturday’s six-pack

— 96 major leaguers have been on the DL more than once this season.

— White Sox 6, Royals 3- KC has followed 9-game win streak with a 2-10 skid.

— Mets 7, Phillies 6— Amed Rosario’s first MLB homer was the game-winner.

— Marlins 6, Rockies 3— Giancarlo Stanton hit his 40th home run.

— Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill will have knee surgery, is done for the season.

— DL happenings:

Cubs’ C Willson Contreras (hamstring) is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.

New York P CC Sabathia (knee) goes on the 10-day DL.

Seattle P James Paxton (pectoral) goes on the 10-day DL

*****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

13) Buffalo Bills had an active Friday; they traded WR Sammy Watkins and a 2018 6th-round pick to the Rams, getting CB E.J. Gaines and an ’18 2nd-round pick in return.

They also traded CB Ronald Darby to the Eagles for WR Jordan Matthews and a 2018 3rd-round pick. Buffalo now has six picks in the first three rounds of the 2018 draft.

In 2014, Bills traded two first-round draft picks to move up and acquire Watkins ahead of Mike Evans, Odell Beckham, Jr. Oy.

12) Dallas Cowboys’ RB Ezekiel Elliott was suspended by the NFL for six games; Dallas has a Week 6 bye, so Elliott can return for the Week 8 game with the Redskins.

11) Indians @ Rays Thursday night; attendance was 9,533
Indians @ Rays Friday night; attendance was 16,794

When the Rays move to Canada and become the Montreal Expos, this is why…….

10) Eagles’ backup QB Matt McGloin was 28-42 passing in Green Bay Thursday; lot of passes for a third-string QB to throw in an exhibition game.

9) Chicago Bears have a veteran QB trying to hold off a first-round draft pick, with a head coach on the hot seat. Sound familiar?

The 2016 Rams had a veteran QB (Case Keenum) trying to hold off a first-round draft pick (Jared Goff), with a head coach on the hot seat (Jeff Fisher).

Hope this season works out better for Coach Fox than last year did for Jeff Fisher.

8) Didn’t help Chicago’s new QB Mike Glennon when he threw a pick-6 0:48 into the Bears’ first preseason game, Thursday vs Denver. People are not patient in today’s world.

7) One of the prettiest plays of the weekend was Miami backup QB David Fales throwing a 99-yard TD to Damore’ea Stringfellow, an undrafted free agent from Ole Miss.

6) Golfer Patrick Cantlay eagled the 7th hole at the PGA Thursday and Friday. Hard to do.

5) Dodgers started this season 10-12; they’re 71-21 since. LA was 9-11 when they called Cody Bellinger up to the big leagues on April 25- you do the math.

4) Houston Astros were 58-27 in their first 85 games, with a 3.91 team ERA.
Since then, they’re 13-16, with a 5.20 team ERA.

3) Cardinals’ pitcher Lance Lynn got drilled in the top of his head by a line drive hit by Lorenzo Cain Thursday night, but he stayed in the game and pitched six innings. St Louis swept four games from Kansas City- they hit grand slams in consecutive games Wednesday/Thursday for the first time in six years.

2) Jeffrey Loria has apparently sold the Miami Marlins for $1.25B, thats billion, with a B, to a group of 16 investors, most famous of which is Derek Jeter, who will run the baseball side. Fans in Miami are better off without Loria.

1) Over the last seven years, A’s/Nationals have made ten separate trades; it is almost like your local fantasy league, where certain people only trade with certain other people.

But in a business where teams are worth $1B or so, or more, do teams really do each other favors when one team is in contention and the other isn’t?

On July 16, the A’s sent Sean Doolittle/Ryan Madson to bullpen-starved Washington- the Nationals also added Brandon Kintzler from the Twins. Problem solved for Washington.

When the A’s needed a catcher in 2013, all of a sudden Kurt Suzuki fell into their lap, a gift from the Nationals. It helps to have friends.

MLB roundup: Benintendi fuels Red Sox past Yankees
August 12, 2017

NEW YORK -- Andrew Benintendi continued his torrid month by hitting two three-run homers as the Boston Red Sox posted a 10-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Benintendi tied a career high with six RBIs by homering in consecutive at-bats off Luis Severino (9-5) when Boston scored five times in the third and fifth innings.

It was Benintendi's third career multi-homer game. In his last eight games, he is batting .484 (15-for-31) with four homers and 11 RBIs after hitting .222 during July.

Mookie Betts added a two-run single and rookie Rafael Devers hit a two-run double as the Red Sox won for the ninth time in 10 games and moved 4 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees in the American League East.

Blue Jays 7, Pirates 2

TORONTO -- Chris Rowley has made the unusual transition from West Point graduate to a major league pitcher and allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings in Toronto's victory over Pittsburgh.

The 26-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in 2013 after he was not drafted before embarking on his U.S. Army commitment.

Rob Refsnyder had three hits for Toronto, which gained a split of the first two games of the three-game interleague series.

Indians 3, Rays 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jay Bruce drove in his first two runs since joining Cleveland, helping his new team to a win over Tampa Bay.

Bruce had an RBI bloop double in the first inning and an RBI single in the sixth, accounting for the only RBIs for the Indians. Cleveland starter Mike Clevinger (6-4) held the Rays to four hits in seven innings, striking out nine batters while walking only one.

Tampa Bay dropped to .500 for the first time since June 16, and the Rays were shut out for the second straight night and the fifth time in eight games. They've scored just eight runs in those eight games, the lowest-scoring eight-game stretch in the franchise's 20-year history.

Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 2

PHOENIX -- Brandon Drury's two-run double keyed a four-run sixth inning that broke up Jon Lester's pitching duel with Patrick Corbin, and Arizona ended a three-game losing streak by beating Chicago.

Corbin (9-11) was coming off two successive rough starts that included a 16-4 loss to Chicago in which he allowed eight runs in three innings. On Saturday, he consistently shut down Cubs threats while scattering five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

Arizona had dropped five of six before Saturday's victory. Archie Bradley followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, but closer Fernando Rodney gave up Kris Bryant's two-run single in the ninth to end the shutout. David Hernandez came on to strike out Ben Zobrist with two runners on for his second save of the season and first with Arizona.

Cardinals 6, Braves 5

ST. LOUIS -- Paul DeJong and Randal Grichuk each homered to support Carlos Martinez's six solid innings as surging St. Louis edged Atlanta.

DeJong's team-leading 17th homer in the bottom of the seventh finished the scoring for St. Louis, which was held below eight runs for the first time since a 4-1 win on Aug. 5 in Cincinnati.

Martinez (9-9) allowed seven hits and three runs in winning his second straight start, walking one and striking out seven. Tyler Lyons followed with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Trevor Rosenthal survived a shaky ninth for his 11th save.

Royals 5, White Sox 4

CHICAGO -- Melky Cabrera hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and Kansas City held on for a win over Chicago.

Eric Hosmer also homered as Kansas City snapped a five-game losing streak. Jose Abreu hit two solo home runs to lead the White Sox at the plate. Leury Garcia drove in two runs for Chicago, which had its four-game winning streak end.

Cabrera stung his former team with a two-run shot to erase a 4-3 deficit in the eighth. He lifted a low pitch to the opposite field for his 16th homer of the year and his third since Kansas City acquired him from Chicago. Scott Alexander (3-3) posted the win in relief.

Tigers 12, Twins 11

DETROIT -- Justin Upton drilled a walk-off, two-run homer with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Detroit a comeback victory that snapped Minnesota's six-game winning streak.

Mikie Mahtook lined a single to right-center field off reliever Matt Belisle (0-2) to start the ninth and Upton followed with his 22nd home run off a 2-1 fastball. Detroit blew a 5-0 first-inning lead and trailed 11-6 in the seventh before mounting its comeback.

Joe Mauer hit a three-run double and added a two-run homer to drive in five runs for Minnesota. Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer, his fourth home run of the year, in the eighth inning after James McCann reached a career-best five RBIs by hitting into a forceout with runners on first and third. McCann's grand slam in the first put the Tigers on top 5-0.

Marlins 4, Rockies 3

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors in homers, drilled a tiebreaking, three-run shot to left field to lead Miami over Colorado.

Stanton has 41 homers, one short of the franchise season record set by Gary Sheffield in 1996. Stanton has 20 homers in the past 32 games.

Former Marlins manager Mike Redmond, now a bench coach for Colorado, directed the Rockies. The Rockies announced that manager Bud Black missed the game because he was "under the weather." Charlie Blackmon led Colorado with four hits and two steals.

Brewers 6, Reds 5

MILWAUKEE -- Eric Sogard scored on an 10th-inning wild pitch as Milwaukee snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Cincinnati.

The Brewers and Reds combined for six homers, with each side hitting three. Milwaukee's Eric Thames tied it in the sixth with his team-leading 27th homer of the season.

Corey Knebel (1-2) worked around a one-out single in the top of the 10th, giving his offense one more shot. The Brewers loaded the bases with two outs against Tim Adleman (5-10), whose 0-2 curveball to Ryan Braun got past catcher Tucker Barnhart, allowing Sogard to slide home with the winning run.

Phillies 3, Mets 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron Nola stifled New York for seven innings, allowing one earned run and two hits while striking out eight in Philadelphia's come-from-behind victory.

Nola (9-7, 3.02 ERA) is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, posting a 1.71 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes crushed the only bad pitch from Nola, a 2-1 curveball, deep over the left field fence to give New York a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Cespedes continues to swing a hot bat in Philadelphia. His 10 home runs in 18 games at Citizens Bank Park are the most he has in any visiting ballpark.

***********************

Sunday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) There is only one cut in the NFL this summer, from 90 to 53 players on Labor Day weekend, which means that 1,184 guys will hit the streets all at once, and lesser teams will scurry around and try to improve their roster by adding guys the better teams release.

12) I’m thinking it hurts HBO’s Hard Knocks some that there is one less cut date; that is the best part of the program, watching coaches tell guys they didn’t make the team. Sad for the player but compelling TV— lot of times those players move on and play for other teams anyway.

11) St Louis Cardinals are first team to score 8+ runs in six straight wins since ’06 Braves.

10) Cardinals-Pirates are playing a game in Williamsport, PA next weekend, five miles from where the Little League World Series takes place.

Williamsport has a team in the Class A NY-Penn League, so there is a stadium in place there, unlike last year, when Marlins-Braves played a game on a military base in South Carolina, where a stadium was basically built for that game.

9) Tampa Bay Bucs traded up to draft Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo in the 2016 Draft, but he’s been a disappointment and been beaten out by Nick Folk. Aguayo missed an extra point and a 47-year old FG Friday night— he got cut Saturday, which should make for an interesting scene on Hard Knocks Tuesday night.

8) If you’re not contending for a Wild Card spot in the American League, your team stinks, because some of the contending teams aren’t very good.

7) Pat O’Hara is a QB coach for the Houston Texans; he was in the terrific football movie Any Given Sunday, playing Dennis Quaid’s backup QB who also gets hurt, which forces Jamie Foxx’s (#3 QB) character into the game, where he becomes a star.

In real life, O’Hara was mostly a backup QB at USC; he played for seven different Arena League teams and has had a very interesting career. NFL Films should do a feature on him.

6) Total plays run from scrimmage in last February’s Super Bowl: Patriots 93, Falcons 46.

5) Cincinnati Bengal fans should be slow to criticize coach Marvin Lewis, who is 118-110-3 in 14 years as the Bengals’ coach, From 1984-2002, before Lewis took over, Cincy went 116-192 under four different head coaches. Be careful what you ask for……..

4) Denver Broncos have only one road game in the first six weeks this season; they have a bye and four home games, then play on road in Weeks 7-9, with a Week 8 Monday night game, then a Week 9 game in Philly six days later. Unusual schedule; Denver has a new head coach and very little experience at quarterback.

3) Consider the career of former NFL QB Tony Banks:
— From 1996-98, Banks went 14-29 as QB of the Rams. When they cut him loose after 1998, they won the Super Bowl in ’99 behind Kurt Warner, who backed up Banks in ’98.

— In 2000, Banks started the first eight games for the Ravens, going 5-3, but Games 7-8 were 10-3/14-6 losses, so Banks was replaced by Trent Dilfer……and the Ravens won the Super Bowl.

I’ll leave the facts there and let you make your own judgments.

2) Gregg Williams is the new defensive coordinator in Cleveland; he has his son Blake back on the coaching staff this year. Blake Williams was on the Rams’ coaching staff as linebackers’ coach in 2012, the year Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL because of Bountygate, but apparently the other coaches couldn’t stand young Williams and he was shown the door.

1) If I was an NFL head coach (a frightening thought), my team would go for it on 4th down a lot and go for 2 after every TD in exhibition games. Games don’t matter; it is a good chance to get more plays to evaluate your players. Thats what these exhibition games and mainly for….that and ripping off fans who pay regular season prices to watch games that don’t matter.

MLB notebook: Yankees place Tanaka on DL
August 12, 2017

The New York Yankees placed right-hander Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list Saturday because of right shoulder inflammation.

Tanaka, 28, has battled elbow injuries over the last two years. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

"We had him talk to our doctor," manager Joe Girardi told reporters prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the Boston Red Sox. "Our doctor prescribed that he's fatigued and he's probably got some inflammation. Nothing structural."

Tanaka (8-10, 4.92 ERA) last pitched on Wednesday in a poor outing against the Blue Jays, walking a career-high five batters and allowing three runs -- two earned -- and two hits in four-plus innings in the Yankees' 11-5 win in Toronto.

--Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to the 10-day disabled list with left knee inflammation after just one game and four at-bats.

Prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the New York Yankees, the Red Sox announced the move, retroactive to Aug. 9. Pedroia is on the DL for a third time this season. Manager John Farrell said there is no reason to believe Pedroia is lost for the season.

"There's nothing we have right now that suggests he won't be back to us," Farrell said. "There's been no talk of any other kind of procedure, anything that's similar to what he went through after last season. I felt like he was getting there after the work. Obviously the irritation returned and he needs some more time at this point."

Farrell said Pedroia, 34, has been dealing with a recurrence of swelling and inflammation in his surgically repaired left knee and did not respond favorably to treatment. Pedroia leads the Red Sox in batting average (.303) and on-base percentage (.378), with 17 doubles, six home runs and 54 RBIs.

--Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg is expected to start a rehab assignment Monday.

Strasburg, who has been on the disabled list since July 27 with a nerve impingement in his right elbow, told reporters Saturday that he will make a start Monday at Class A Potomac.

The 29-year-old Strasburg threw 57 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday and said the elbow "feels really good." Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux said that Strasburg is slated for five innings or 75 pitches Monday.

Strasburg (10-3, 3.25 ERA) has been sidelined since pitched two scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 23. He went on the disabled list four days later.

--The Toronto Blue Jays placed catcher Russell Martin on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique and selected the contract of catcher Mike Ohlman from Triple-A Buffalo.

Martin left the game Friday night after the first inning when he grounded out. He is batting .223/.354/.381 with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs in 81 games this season.

In five games with the Blue Jays this year, Ohlman is 2-for-9 (.222) with an RBI. He will share the catching duties with Raffy Lopez.

--Right-hander Scott Feldman of the Cincinnati Reds was reinstated from the disabled list, and he started Saturday's day against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

The 34-year-old Feldman, who entered the game with a 7-7 record and a 4.34 ERA in 19 starts this season, went on the disabled list because of right knee inflammation on July 18.

To make room on the roster for Feldman, the Reds designated infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara for assignment.

--Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco left with a leg injury in the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Polanco limped off the field after charging a bloop single by Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the fifth.

Sean Rodriguez entered the game to play left field and John Jaso moved from left field to right

LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs. Giants, Kuechel vs. Rangers
August 12, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

NIGHT MOVES

Max Scherzer will start the second game of the Washington Nationals' day-night doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, well, because he feels like it. Manager Dusty Baker said Scherzer preferred to pitch at night, so the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner will get the ball for the 7:05 p.m. start after A.J. Cole starts at 1:05 p.m. ''You have to kind of acquiesce to what the aces want to do,'' Baker said. ''And until the other guys are aces, they have to adjust to your aces.''

---

RIVALS

Houston lefty Dallas Keuchel faces Texas while trying to bounce back from his first two losses of the season, making his fourth start since returning from his second stint on the DL caused by a neck injury. He pitched six shutout innings in his only start against the Rangers this season, a 7-1 win on June 2. That was his last start before spending nearly two months on the DL. Keuchel allowed eight runs and 10 hits in four innings in his last start, an 8-5 defeat to the Chicago White Sox that started the Astros' season-high four-game losing streak.

---

ROLLING PITCHERS

Two pitchers who have been on a roll face off when the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks close a three-game series. Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is 4-2 with a 2.18 ERA in seven starts since July 2, while Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Godley is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts.

---

UNDER THE LIGHTS

Left-hander Chris Sale leads the majors with 229 strikeouts going into Sunday night's start at Yankee Stadium. He is 3-0 in his last five starts - he hasn't given up a run in four of them. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is scheduled to start for New York, a day after he was hit on the head by a fly ball while he signed autographs as the Red Sox took batting practice. He bled from a cut on his ear.

Sunday's Diamond Notes
August 13, 2017

Hottest team: Red Sox (9-1 past 10 overall)

After a 5-4 loss on Friday to snap their eight-game winning streak, the Red Sox were back at it starting a new winning run with a 10-5 victory over the Yankees. Rookie Andrew Benintendi swatted a pair of homers with six RBI, becoming the first Red Sox rookie to record six RBI against the Yankees since the statistic became official back in 1920. Now, the Red Sox turn to Chris Sale against Jordan Montgomery is a pitching matchup which looks to be heavily skewed in favor of the road team. The Red Sox are now 9-1 over their past 10 games overall, 5-2 in their past seven inside the division and 4-1 over their past five on the road.

Coldest team: Astros (0-5 past five games, 3-11 past 14 overall)

The Astros haven't appeared on the 'cold' list very often this season, but they're struggling lately. Houston has dropped five in a row, and they look to avoid the broom in Arlington against their in-state rivals from Texas. The Rangers are always a thorn in the side of the Astros, going 38-13 in their past 51 meetings at home against Houston. They're also 77-35 in the past 112 meetings overall. Houston has dropped seven in a row on the road, five straight overall and four of their past five inside the division. They're still 8-1 in Dallas Keuchel's past nine road starts and 10-1 over his past 11 inside the division.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Sale, Red Sox (14-4, 2.57 ERA)

Sale heads into Sunday Night Baseball with the best ERA in the American League at 2.57. Through 23 starts the opposition is hitting just .193 against him with a 0.88 WHIP and he has struck out a major league high 229 batters while walking just 29 over 161 1/3 innings. He has managed an 8-3 record with a 2.37 ERA across 13 road outings, posting 137 strikeouts over just 91 innings away from home. He hasn't beaten the Yankees this season in two tries, but he is 0-1 with a 1.15 WHIP across 15 2/3 innings with 23 strikeouts and just two walks. The Red Sox are 5-1 over Sale's past six road starts, 16-5 across his past 21 overall and 5-2 in the past seven inside the division.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Moore, Giants (3-12, 5.88 ERA)

The left-hander for the Giants has allowed more earned runs (84) than any other pitcher in the majors. He also has won just three of his 15 decisions overall with the opposition hitting a robust .294 against him. It appears Moore will not have to face OF Bryce Harper (knee), as he slipped an injured his knee on a wet base in Saturday's game, but even without the All-Star outfielder the Nats lineup is extremely dangerous. The Giants are just 3-9 over Moore's past 12 starts on the road, 5-16 over his past 21 overall and 1-7 across his past eight inside the division.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (5-0 past four overall)

The 'under' connected in Saturday's 3-0 victory at Tampa Bay, giving Cleveland five consecutive under results. The under is 4-0 in their past four against a right-handed starting pitcher and 4-1 over their past five on the road against teams with a winning home mark. The under is also 31-15-5 in their past 51 on the road, while going 7-2 in thei past nine starts by Corey Kluber against American League East clubs. The under has hit for Tampa Bay lately, too, going 8-1 in their past nine home games and 19-7-2 in their past 28 games overall. And with Austin Pruitt on the mound, the under has hit in four straight overall.

Biggest OVER run: Royals (6-1-1 past eight overall)

The 'over' is 6-1-1 over the past eightgames overall for Kansas City, and 4-1-1 in their past six against a team with a winning percentage under .400. However, with Jason Vargas on the bump, the over will certainly not be easy. The under has hit in nine of his past 13 road outings, and 20 of the past 29 starts overall by the All-Star. The under is also 10-4-2 in Kansas City's past 16 overall on the road. The under is also 3-0-1 across the past four meetings with the White Sox, including Saturday's narrow 5-4 win with a total of 10.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Padres

The Padres might be 14 games below .500, but they have played playoff-caliber baseball this weekend at Chavez Ravine, giving the Dodgers all they can handle. The Fathers dealt the Dodgers a rare home loss on Friday, and the Dodgers had to rally late to win Saturday's battle. Not bad for a San Diego side which has won 19f of their past 59 trips down Elysian Park Avenue. With Paul Nauert behind the dish calling balls and strikes, the home teams is 22-5 across his past 27 calls. The Padres are also 1-8 over the past nine with Nauert behind the dish.

Betcha didn’t know:
The Giants and Nationals will play a doubleheader on Sunday. Each of the past five doubleheaders this season have resulted in splits, and 14 of the past 16 have had each side win a game apiece. Overall in 17 doubleheaders this season there have been just three sweeps, with the road team breaking out the brooms on two of those occasions. Washington split its last doubleheeader on July 30 against the Rockies, and they also split a twin bill against Philadelphia on May 14. In fact, Washington has split its past three twin bills datingback to Oct. 3, 2015. San Francisco hasn't been involved in a doubleheader since May 23, 2015, in Colorado, and they split a pair there. The last time the Giants swept a double dip was back on April 23, 2012 at N.Y. Mets.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-280) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Cubs (+115) at Diamondbacks

Biggest line move: Padres (+315 to +280) at Dodgers

Thrifty Mets deal Neil Walker to Brewers
August 13, 2017

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Mets traded infielder Neil Walker to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, the latest veteran dealt by out-of-contention New York as it pivots toward 2018.

New York gets a player to be named and will pay the Brewers cash to cover a portion of the $4,041,530 remaining in Walker's $17.2 million salary. He can become a free agent after the World Series.

The 31-year-old is hitting .264 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs in 73 games this season after batting .282 with 23 homers and 55 RBIs in 2016, when he had season-ending back surgery on Sept. 8.

Milwaukee is third in the NL Central, two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs.

''I'm excited to be back in a playoff race,'' Walker said.

New York had expected to contend but is 52-62. The Mets previously traded outfielder Jay Bruce, first baseman Lucas Duda and relief pitcher Addison Reed.

''This series of transactions opens up the opportunity for us to observe some new players,'' Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. ''When things don't go the way they were expected to go, then you have to shift direction and do the best you can to change direction.''

The Mets acquired Walker from the Pittsburgh for pitcher Jon Niese on Dec. 9, 2015, after allowing Daniel Murphy to become a free agent. Murphy has gone on to have two All-Star seasons with Washington.

Alderson praised Walker's performance in New York.

''He was an excellent player,'' Alderson said. ''A first-rate guy. Very important in the clubhouse. I'm very glad we had him for the time we did and I think he distinguished himself as a Met.''

Walker said he is looking forward to playing in Milwaukee, where he has batted .286 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs in 51 games at Miller Park. He expects to arrive in time for the Brewers' game against Cincinnati on Sunday.

''I've always felt pretty good there,'' he said.

Curtis Granderson, like Walker, Bruce, Duda and Reed, is eligible for free agency. Alderson hinted at the possibility of more deals, saying: ''We still have inventory.''

MIAMI (AP) Giancarlo Stanton homered for the fourth straight game, hitting his 42nd of the year to tie the Marlins' season record, and Miami completed its first series sweep of the Colorado Rockies since 2006, winning 5-3 Sunday.

Stanton homered leading off the third inning to match Gary Sheffield's team record set in 1996. It was the 250th homer of Stanton's career and came in his 941st game. Only five players since 1913 have reached the 250-milestone faster.

Rockies All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, the major league RBI leader, left the game in the fifth inning after being hit on the left hand by an 88 mph fastball thrown by Vance Worley.

German Marquez (9-5) lost for the first time in seven starts, allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Javy Guerra (1-0) earned his first victory since 2014 with two scoreless innings, and Odrisamer Despaigne pitched a perfect ninth for his first big league save.

DODGERS 6, PADRES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Justin Turner hit two home runs, Yasmani Grandal also went deep and Los Angeles won for the 28th time in 33 games, improving the best record in the majors to 83-34. The Dodgers are 16-0-3 in their last 19 series, and haven't lost one since June 5-7 to Washington.

Cory Spangenberg hit two home runs for the Padres.

Kenta Maeda (11-4) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and four hits and striking out eight. Kenley Jansen retired the Padres in order in the ninth for his 32nd save. Luis Perdomo (6-7) was the loser.

GIANTS 4, NATIONALS 2, FIRST GAME; NATIONALS 6, GIANTS 2, 11 INNINGS, SECOND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) - Howie Kendrick hit a game-ending grand slam in the 11th inning, and the Nationals salvaged the finale of a day-night doubleheader.

Daniel Murphy and Ryan Zimmerman also homered for Washington in the makeup of Friday night's rainout. Max Scherzer struck out 10 in seven innings and Matt Albers (6-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

It was Washington's first day since slugger Bryce Harper got hurt Saturday when he slipped on first base. The All-Star has a significant bone bruise in his left knee but no ligament damage, general manager Mike Rizzo said. The Nationals hope he can return this season.

Chris Stratton (1-2) led San Francisco to the win in the opener, striking out a career-high 10 in 6 2/3 shutout innings. Joe Panik had three hits and two RBIs, and Sam Dyson got three outs for his ninth save.

San Francisco's A.J. Cole (1-3) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, Murphy singled off Albert Suarez (0-2) leading off the 11th and raced to third on Zimmerman's bloop hit. After Suarez intentionally walked Anthony Rendon, Kendrick homered to left.

CUBS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Jake Arrieta (12-8) won consecutive starts for the first time since early April, Javier Baez and Ian Happ hit consecutive home runs in the eighth inning and Chicago reopened a one-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central.

Kris Bryant put the Cubs ahead when he scored from second on a wild pitch from Zack Godley (5-5) in the first inning on strike three to Victor Caratini. The reigning NL MVP added his 21st home run of the season in the ninth inning, reaching base for the 13th time in 15 plate appearances during the three-game series.

Arrieta allowed one run and three hits in six innings. Godley had three wild pitches and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits.

ASTROS 2, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Dallas Keuchel (10-2) struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings for his first win since June 2 against the Rangers, just before his nearly two-month stint on the disabled list. AL-leading Houston stopped its longest losing streak this season at five games.

Jose Altuve's 17th home run came in the fourth off Andrew Cashner (7-9). Adrian Beltre's 12th homer pulled the Rangers even in the sixth, and Carlos Beltran had a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh.

Joey Gallo lined into an inning-ending double play with runners at second and third in the eighth against Ken Giles, who struck out two in the ninth for his 23rd save.

BLUE JAYS 7, PIRATES 1

TORONTO (AP) - J.A. Happ (6-8) allowed one run and four hits in six innings to win his third straight start, Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer and Justin Smoak and Darwin Barney added solo homers.

Toronto scored five runs off Chad Kuhl (5-8) while batting around in the first inning and taking a 5-1 lead. Pittsburgh managed just one hit after the first, and none in the final five innings.

INDIANS 4, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Austin Jackson hit a tiebreaking home run off Tommy Hunter (2-3) leading off the eighth inning.

Corey Kluber (11-3) struck out nine in seven innings for the AL Central leaders, his 14th straight start of fanning eight or more. He gave up four hits, including a two-run homer to Steve Souza Jr. in the sixth that made it 3-all.

Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 21st save.

Tampa Bay went 2-7 on a nine-game homestand in which the Rays were shut out five times and scored 11 runs.

TWINS 6, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano homered for Minnesota. The Twins blew an early 4-0 lead but Byron Buxton hit a tiebreaking single off Warwick Saupold after Bruce Rondon (1-3) walked the first two batters in the eighth.

A day earlier, the Twins trailed 5-0, rallied for an 11-6 lead, then lost to the Tigers 12-11 on Justin Upton's two-run homer in the ninth.

Detroit has lost seven of nine.

Minnesota's Chris Gimenez had three passed balls in the fifth and Ervin Santana threw a toss through his legs for a wild pitch.

Tyler Duffey (2-3) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Trevor Hildenberger struck out Upton with a runner on first to end the eighth, then pitched the ninth for his first big league save.

METS 6, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson hit two-run homers and the Phillies ran themselves into trouble after Chris Flexen (2-1) loaded the bases in the fifth inning with no outs.

Nick Williams hit a shallow fly to center, and Conforto's throw home scooted away from Travis d'Arnaud. Odubel Herrera put his head down and sprinted for third, unaware Freddy Galvis hadn't moved off the base. D'Arnaud hustled to third to complete a short toss and an 8-2-5 double play.

Zach Eflin (1-4) allowed Conforto's 26th homer and Granderson's 17th.

ROYALS 14, WHITE SOX 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Whit Merrifield hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs. Drew Butera had four of Kansas City's 16 hits as the Royals climb back over .500 at 59-58.

Jason Vargas (14-6) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, matching his career high for wins set in 2012 with Seattle.

Derek Holland (6-12) lasted just two-plus innings in his shortest start of the year. He was charged with seven runs and seven hits.

BREWERS 7, REDS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Neil Walker had two hits in his Milwaukee debut, and Domingo Santana hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Sal Romano (2-5), who gave up seven runs, six of them earned, in five innings.

Acquired from the New York Mets on Saturday, Walker started at third base in place of the banged-up Travis Shaw and went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Matt Garza (6-6) allowed four runs - three earned - and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, and Corey Knebel worked the ninth for his 22nd save.

BRAVES 6, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - R.A. Dickey (8-7) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer and Atlanta stopped the Cardinals' season-high, eight-game winning streak and the Braves' five-game losing streak.

Arodys Vizcaino pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Michael Wacha (9-5) gave up four runs and five hits in eight innings.

ATHLETICS 9, ORIOLES 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Chapman hit a tiebreaking three-run homer off Jeremy Hellickson (1-2) in a five-run fourth as Oakland overcame a 2-0 deficit.

Manny Machado hit his 22nd homer and scored twice for Baltimore.

Kendall Graveman (3-3) matched his career high of eight strikeouts, allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings.

ANGELS 4, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Parker Bridwell (7-1) yielded one run and four hits in six innings, winning his fifth straight decision and extended Los Angeles' winning streak to six as the Angels moved into the second spot in the AL wild-card race.

C.J. Cron homered and Martin Maldonado had a two-run single for the Angels. Ariel Miranda (7-6) walked a career-high six and allowed four runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
