Piniella said "we need you in the bullpen"

We need to start a poll on the biggest headcases in sports. He would have to be a nominee

Watching pre game of Cubs game and yes this is happening. Big Z has not been in the bullpen since June 28th, 2002. Wow.

He ages Larry Rothschild about 2 years with every inning pitched. Never seen a guy do so many face palms in one game.

Why me? Were you under the impression I was getting a piece of his contract only IF he remained a starter?
Poor Zoom for not knowing my thoughts on this seasons Cub team. |

Seems everyone thinks this is either a bad move or laughable one. Personally I think it is the only move they could make.
One of the bad spots, and there are a few, on the team is the lack of a righthanded reliever. Samargin (sp) has been miserable and they are loaded with lefties. In addition Z was struggling with his pitch count and that alone was taxing the bullpen. So moving him to the pen will give the team a chance to try and get another righthander without being robbed and also give Z some time to work out his problems. Starting pitching is one of the strong suits with all the other SP doing a really good job..Silva has been the surprise on the team, if not in the NL, and Lilly has been their most cosistant winner the last 3 seasons. Now, if Aram can get his head out of his ass they may be able to start scoring runs. |

Its a bad move because its a stupid move. For as bad as he has been or as bad as people think he has been (he hasnt pitched as poorly as perceived) they are still moving a better than average starter to the pen for guys like Silva and Gorzelanny who have proven more incapable the past few seasons.
Pinella is the one who might be losing it really while batting 2 of his top hitters in the early going (Soriano & Soto) in front of the 8 & 9 spots and behind Aramis Ramirez who he has behind Marlon Byrd. The guy is setting his own players up to fail from what I can tell in the early going.

Carlos is a big guy, 250lbs, like 6'5". I've always wondered if his size would catch up with him as he got older. His first start this year was terrible, but since then, like you said, he hasn't been bad. Takes awhile to get the era down when you start with 8 runs in 1 2/3 innings. I'm curious if there's some kind of injury, some kind of fatigue factor that's preventing him from going deep into games. If he's only capable of pitching 4 or 5 innings per start, that gives the cubs terrible middle relief plenty of time to blow any lead he may have garnered in that time anyway, in which case a long reliever may be a good spot for him. But from what I've noticed this year, he's gotten stronger as the game's gone on, so that wouldnt make sense either. who knows what lou thinks most of the time |

I think the underlying reason for the move is to pi$$ him off enough so Z will waive his "no trade clause" just to get out of town ASAP. It also helps that Samardija is the worse reliever known to Man. His mindset that hurts him as a starter will be worse as a set up man IMO.
