Fire sales

What Pittsburgh and SD are doing...is a terrible crime to baseball

They sit there and receive penalty money from the Yanks and Mets and then sell off their talent

Everyone loves to hate the teams that invest in their teams and their cities...these ownerships need to be disolved

Where is Bowie Kuhn when you need him. He would stop the "white sales" like he stopped Oakland from trading Vida Blue to the Yankees. If you want parity over time, run MLB like a Fantasy League . All players would be designated A-B-C players. Then ALL trades must have an equal number of A-B-C players going in each direction.

The problem is that just because the Yanks have not won the WS since 2000 that is how everyone views the payroll tax....

It is sad for some of these cities

MLB has to stop giving those teams a slice of the pie.

It's ridiculous. I also just can't stand that teams now think if they are not in it and they have good players, they have to trade them. How about win or lose, take your team - improve it maybe and get them next year

lol i like the firesale. im real big into everything about baseball, and prospects and trades really intrigue me.

these small market teams dont have the flexibility lets say the yankees do because, the yankees sell more tickets, more apparel, more everything then other teams.

theres no point to keep a player, or in the pirates case a whole team, that hasnt and wont do anything anytime soon.

until huntington took over the pirates had no plan, they now have a plan, its a 3-5 year plan. they take the 22 prospects they got with what they already have and build around it. when they show its time to win they will add pieces via free agency.

padres are in the process of getting new owners.

the problem with what the pirates were doing before is they werent getting the best value for their players, they wanted guys who were mediocre but major league ready, they never asked for or got high ceiling players. you need some of them and hope they reach it or come close to it.

seannie, the problem is that they dont have guys anymore that they CAN ask for high ceiling guys. you are not going to get 5 tool players for Sanchez, Wilson, Laroche..etc...

you are going to get B prospects like a Brandon Moss, Hart, and guys like that that would not be playing on 25 other teams MLB rosters right now.

they got tim alderson who is #23 overall, lastings milledge is a great talent, they have pedro alvarez who will prob be starting at 3rd next year.

they got 22 prospects in a month, they are going to be just fine. their prob has been they have 1 or 2 good players, and 23 average players. they are trying to now even everything out

well, we all know the difference between prospects and promise....i mean....some of these guys can be projected to be at one place and end another....

injuries, not living up to expectations....etc....they may all be highly touted now, but successful teams need a solid 40 man roster, and the Pirates are never going to get to the point where they have that many because they are constantly going to trade the best ones again.

cycle through!!

i already said.....its a new regime who is committed to player development. they have to start all over again because they shitty to average players who only knew losing. lets be honest nate mcclouth is good, but hes far from anything spectacular, he was the best player on a bad team.

when it became clear wilson and sanchez wouldnt take less money to sign an extension, they decided on an all out fire sale. with 22 prospects law of averages says at least 7 will be major league talent.

its something that had to be done. you have to completely change the culture and design of the team.

eventually a team like the twins will have to do this, and teams like mets and cubs who constantly keep underachieving and arent getting younger will too.

look at tampa they are fine now, but in 3-4 years when its time to start paying guys, its gonna be a marlins-like firesale.
