Garza dealt to the Cubs

Matt Garza, SP TB

News: ESPN reports that the Rays have traded SP Matt Garza to the Cubs in return for SP Chris Archer, OF Brandon Guyer, C Robinson Chirinos, SS Hak-Ju Lee and OF Sam Fuld, pending physicals.

Tampa isn't stupid so I'm sure these prospects are good but the Cubs are obviously in a must win now mode with that payroll and roster that doesn't match up to it.

Yeah I'm not familiar with the players the Cubs gave up but I know the Rays have top notch scouts and definitely wouldn't take scraps for a guy like Garza who is under control for a couple more seasons at a decent price so the prospects had to be legit.

From what I hear Hendry is fuc*ed if the Cubs don't show dramatic improvement so I highly doubt he cares how the Cubs will look in 5 years anyways.

If Zambrano looks like the guy who finished last season and not the one who started it and Pena has a bounce back year and Aramis can stay healthy maybe they can catch a few breaks and win 85-90?

I still liked Milwaukee a lot and especially after they added Greinke and the Cardinals will always compete and the Reds have all sorts of young talent so this division just got a whole lot tougher overall.

Garza's good shit. Have liked him since Minny. Cubs got a solid pitcher here.

He's a flyball pitcher, should be real good at Wrigley in July and August. Going from the AL to the NL should help though.

Not sure what my Cubs are doing. They now have Silva/Zambrano/Garza, three guys with personality issues, a rookie manager and a rookie pitching coach. I guess when they are locked in 4th place in late July we can still watch to see if there are any blowups in the dugout.

Always liked Garza.

Twins never should have gotten rid of him.

Unlikely, yes. Improbable, no. In baseball once a season gets going and wins start flowing a team everyone thought looked like junk suddenly looks legit.

Their starting pitching and bullpen isnt horrible but they need huge years from Aramis and Pena and also thats not unheard of. But yes I dont think its likely but I do think it is possible.

Garza won't save those poor Cubbies and in the process the Cubbies gave up the farm

Hardly

Lee is 19/20 years old and either he or Castro were going to go.

The 3 were all in the top 10 of Cub prospects, but according to radio guys, the top tier were not traded

Time will tell

Anyone who is looking to lead a franchise long term wouldn't have made this move.....it just doesn't make competitive sense but GM's like Melvin and Hendry are on the hot seat and need to win now so they ponied up and got Greinke and Garza.

I think Milwaukee is closer than the Cubs on paper but like I said sometimes once wins start flowing it gets contagious and can carry a team through the Summer kinda like the Padres last season.....if the Cubs get a few guys to bounce back nicely anything can happen.

The Tampa radio announcer is from Chicago and was here last week. He was interviewed after the trade and stated he felt the trade was good for both sides. He mentioned a conversation he had with Madden b4 Christmas, e=regarding the rumors that Garza may become a closer. He said, not me, "Madden told me that he had recieved reports that Garza was one of the top 10/12 pitchers in MLB based on the valuations of sabemetrics, and no way he would be a closer because he would want the $$ that comes with being a top starter."

If he becomes one of the top starters, Cubs will have the relief from retiring contracts to afford him in 3 years.

Cubs had to make deals..W Sox were getting all the ink here and the Ricketts family was looking bad after attempting to get $200M to help renovate Wrigley, especially from a Mayor and Govenor who are WSox fans and Dems. Add to that that the Cub convention, which has sold out within 30' in the past, is still not sold out for the first time ever, forced Hendry to make the deal..eye candy trade, imo
