Lou Piniella
Lou Piniella will step down as manager of the Cubs after Sunday's game due to the declining health of his mother.
Piniella was set to retire at the end of the season, anyway, but it's a shame to see him go out like this. Piniella's reign in Chicago obviously didn't go as he had hoped, but he's had a nice managerial career that includes a World Series championship with the Reds in 1990. Third base coach Mike Quade, not bench coach Alan Trammell, will manage the team for the rest of the season. Quade will be considered for the full-time job after the season, along with Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg and a host of other candidates. Source: Gordon Wittenmyer on Twitter

True his mother is ill, but Lou should have left months ago..He did a chit job this season. His refusal to move D Lee from the 3 hole was enough of a reason to fire his ass. Ask Atlanta fans how they like D Lee, who has left 8 base runners on in just two games..Mr Clutch he is NOT this season

I also think Kirk Gibson is doing a pretty crappy in Arizona to be honest with you. Neither Gibson or Trammel should get a chance to manage again at the major league level IMO and I also don't think Ryne Sandberg is ready to manage at this level. I doubt the Cubs will go for a big name replacement because the team is in a semi rebuilding mode but maybe thats more reason to give Sandberg a shot now since that is sure to generate interest in the offseason but I believe that would be setting him up to fail personally with this team the way its currently built.

Hendry, imo, wants Girardi, Freddie, fired from Florida.or in the 3 hole is Brendly, who from the booth knows more about the Cub players than any one in the U S. He stated when he was with the Giants, Craig came aboard mid season, and brought a piece of paper and pencil..took names of those staying and those going while he quietly sat there and observed. I have a feeling Brendly has used up a whole legal pad making notes |

Hopefully is mother will be ok, but he isnt the manager he use to be in my opinion. I think he is past his best before date & enjoys his retirement.

Had a beer with Lou many years ago in Kansas City at a bar he used to own.
Great guy. Very down to earth. |
