Mariano Rivera, where does he rank?

Ended up getting into about a 20 minute debate w/ a guy from work over Mariano Rivera and where he ranks all-time as a closer.

Without mentioning my standpoint on it, just curious to see how you guys rank him.

Best ever? Top 3? Top 5? None of the above?

Just need some opinions from you guys to help settle this, thanks.

closers back in the day worked 2-3 innings on the reg

its a hard comparison

but using the modern day definition of one inning closer, and maybe even of all time

hes best ever

not trying to be a homer either. it's just common sense.

let's compare stats

hoffman 571 saves
rivera 499 saves

hoffman 2.75 ERA
rivera 2.31 ERA

hoffman 1074 K's in 1009 innings
rivera 971 Ks in 1053 innings

it's close for sure, but you gotta give the edge to the all time saves leader. if rivera passes hoff, then we can give him the crown

Romo gives good argument. Was gonna say basically same thing. Rivera one of top 5 of all time, but def the best over the last 20 years. Tough to compare to guys back prior to 80's when they went 2-3 innings many times a week. WOuld never be done nowadays so you have to take that into the argument. BUt he is easily one of best ever and best last 1/4 century

Kevin Gregg close 2nd

How about 2 of them(and I am not saying he is just offering up an opinion)

Rivera did for the most part against AL teams, Hoffman did it against NL teams.

Rivera did for the most part at a home stadium like Yankee stadium, Hoffman did for the most part at one of the friendliest pitchers parks in all of baseball(probably the friendliest pitchers park in years).
