Jorge Cantu doubled home a run in Florida’s 10-2 romp over Cincinnati Thursday night, extending his major league record by collecting both a hit and an RBI in his 10th straight game.

Fans don’t give much thought to the notion of recording both a hit and an RBI in a single contest, and it’s not something that is treated seriously statistically, but Cantu’s unusual consecutive-games streak to start a season has provided an unforeseen storyline this spring.

Cantu has 12 hits for the 6-4 Marlins, good for a .308 average and a share of the major league lead with 15 RBIs. “One a day” has been his steady approach, as he has a single hit in eight of 10 games. Cantu has picked up more than a single RBI only twice, though he drove in five of his team’s six runs in a 6-5 win over the Dodgers on April 11. He shares the top spot on the RBI leader board with Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols.
