Wow. Almost 1/2 the big boys. That's more than double the Marlins. They needed to do that though & nice Mauer gave them the hometown discount

Too much money, but what's truly ridiculous is the eight years.

this will seem like a bargain in a few years... best player in baseball, in his prime, good ambassador for the team & baseball... brilliant to lock him up for 8 years

How can anyone say this is a bad deal? If you've got the money then spend it. Who else would they rather have in Minnesota?? A hometown kid who is going to end up being the best hitting catcher of all-time. Great for Minnesota and Mauer.

For the twins though you have to wonder if this will prevent them from future FA signings because Morneau and Mauer can't carry that pitching staff every year.

Also: I'd make any amount of wager that the Yanks/BoSox would have offered him 10 years/ 200+ million.

Agree Hippie that the Yankees and Red Sox would have offered more money/yr (not sure they would have signed for the length).

The Twins have done a decent job lately of locking up some of the younger guys for 4-5 years (Baker, Blackburn, Span) at pretty affordable prices. Morneau is signed through 2013 so they shouldn't have to worry about him. The new stadium definately gives them the opportunity to maintain a higher payroll during the duration of this contract.

Will be interesting to see if Mauer can stay healthy given the issues he has ran into so far during his short career.

If he doesn't hit for power he's not worth 23 per plain and simple. If he goes back to .370 with 8 hrs, that's not worth 18 per
