MLB Team Total future

This one looks extremely easy to me...the books and the public have not done their homework on this team.

500 to win 500

San Diego Padres over 71.5 wins Even

50 to win 1000

San Diego Padres to win NL West 20/1

Here is my reasoning:

This team won 75 games last year. So it makes you wonder, why is the team total 3.5 games less than what they put up last season? Is it because they lost Jake Peavy and his 6 whole wins? Or are they expecting Adrian to be traded during the season? I really think it is because people do not know the young guys on this team and have focused more on the names and low payroll rather than the actual production they have put up.

The reason I like this play a lot is because this team has gotten BETTER since last season despite having the lowest payroll in the league and being one of the youngest teams.

Pitching:

They have a very solid starting rotation with Jon Garland, Chris Young, Kevin Correia, Clayton Richard and likely Matt Latos. Add in a very solid bullpen with one of the best closers last year in Heath Bell, a setup man in Mike Adams who in his last 34 outings, had an ERA of 0.26, with 44 strikeouts, six walks and 10 hits allowed in 342/3 innings. Included was a 24-game summer run in which Adams struck out 29, allowed zero runs, eight hits and four walks. He closed out the year with 15 strikeouts and no hits given up over 92/3 innings. This pitching will not wow you with names, but they do have very solid production.

Hitting:

Everyone knows about Adrian Gonzalez, but he is just the tip of the iceberg. Scott Hairston returns to San Diego via trade, where he excels at hitting in Petco Park. Adrian desperately needs his bat for protection. When Hairston went on the disabled list June 3 with a strained left biceps, he had eight homers and was hitting .327. Gonzalez already had 22 homers and a .292 average. During the 16 games that Hairston missed, Gonzalez hit one homer with two RBI while drawing 21 walks. And Gonzalez slumped again after Hairston was traded to Oakland, hitting only one homer with four RBI in 19 games while going 9-for-60 (.150). Scott owns a .285 average at the pitcher-friendly park with 19 homers and 49 RBI in 344 at-bats. In addition to this, up and comer Kyle Blanks is inserted in to the lineup for additional power. They have speed and they are going to use it without a doubt. They have brought in Dave Roberts this spring to work with the team on stealing bases and the results are already evident. The Padres lead cactus league in stolen bases by double digits. With Tony Gwynn Jr. and Cabrera at the top, they should put pressure on defenses and will try to manufacture some runs.

Overall:

This team isn't spectacular but they have improved dramatically over last season and have a very young team that got its feet wet last year. They caught fire at the end of last season going 37-25 after the 100th game which was 2nd best in baseball over that time period behind the Yankees. They have continued their winning ways this Spring too going 13-2-1 over their last 16 spring games and have a winning record at 15-10-1 overall. This team has all of the pieces in place to fly over this total and in a relatively mediocre division that only helps. The division win future is a longshot but I feel its worth it if they can get on a roll.

Chris Young? Hopefully the rotation is somehow set up such that he can make every single one of his starts at Petco.

His issue is only whether or not he's healthy. A couple seasons ago he had a streak of 25 straight starts on the road without a losing decision...he has no problems except staying healthy. Which is a question mark still but we'll see

GL, i just dont see them winning the division but the total could hit. That being said 20-1 in that division is a worthy small wager.

Wow, I liked everything you put in this thread...but lost me on this statement, Rangers die another grizzly death again by mid-august..like every year.

Good luck with your plays.....like the total wins play alot.......think the key in them outperforming the pundits and giving your division future a shot will be cashing in rbis..seems to be their achilles heel......if the "young guns" can do so.....got a shot.

Another solid hitter they have moving back to his natural spot is Chase Headley. Chase hit well in the second half .293/.377/.421 and in 26 games at third base had a .338 BA and .423 OBP.

This spring, Headley is giving Padre fans a reason to be excited hitting .279/.379/.466. He is leading the team with 21 RBI, with the next closest player with nine, and only 11 strike outs in 58 at bats (5.3k/AB).

supposedly...but anything he gets is a bonus. They had like 3 pitchers going for the 5th spot in the rotation who were all owning during this spring...so if he does go down or suck, they have quality replacements
