Phillies emerge as clear-cut favorite to land Harper

The Philadelphia Phillies, and not the Washington Nationals, have emerged as the clear-cut favorite to sign free-agent outfielder Bryce Harper after meeting with him for five hours Saturday in Vegas.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of ongoing negotiations, but the Phillies have become the most aggressive team in their pursuit for Harper while the Nationals’ interest appears to be waning. Nationals executives are now calling a reunion with Harper a “long shot.’’

The Phillies, who also have interest in signing free-agent infielder Manny Machado, have yet to make an official offer to Harper, but are confident they will sign at least one of the two free-agent megastars. They were strongly encouraged about their chances of signing Harper after meeting with him, his wife and agent Scott Boras in Harper’s hometown. It was their first face-to-face meeting, which included two slide-show presentations by the Phillies.

They are expected to make a formal offer within a week.

The Phillies, according to team executives, have visions of signing Harper, Keuchel and Kimbrel.

I may be in the minority, but I still wish the Yankees would sign him to play 1st base. They need a lefty bat in that line-up and the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium is made for him.

Getting all 3 is hard to believe considering all signs point to Trout in Philly in 2 years. He wants to go home and the Phillies want him. Talks of an extension with LAA broke down too so it is very possible.

I just can't imagine them having all 4 of those contracts.

Wow baseball is crazy. It will be interesting to see where everyone lands. Our Grandparents would not recognition sports anymore. All about the market and the fit and Cap maybe? How times have changed. No more pride or values its gone.

13 years means that Harper's contract is MORE THAN twice as long as any prior FA contract in Phillies history (6 years).

Season averages 26 HR 74 RBI .279 AVG.

Last Year 34 HR 100 RBI .249 AVG.

That doesn't look like a 13/330 player to me

Thomas Barrabi, Fox Business

Slugger Bryce Harper turned down an even more lucrative offer – at least in the short term – than the $330 million contract he received from the Philadelphia Phillies this week, according to a report.

Harper, 27, rejected a four-year deal from the Los Angeles Dodgers that would have paid him $45 million per season, the highest annual pay of any contract in baseball history, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported. The deal would have allowed Harper to become a free agent again at age 30, setting up another huge payday.

According to what I read. Zack Greinke, David Price, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, Yoenis Cespedes, Max Scherzer and Alex Rodriguez (twice),have signed for a higher AAV than Harper in the past
