Very simple: Worst ownership group in the history of Pittsburgh sports. Brought in "yes men" at both GM and Manager for years. Didn't draft right for nearly 15 years, made boneheaded trades, and filled their pockets from fans who wanted to see the beautiful park. Boobleheads, fireworks, and "all you can eat sections" have been the draw over the last 15 years.

I will say under heavily mounting pressure from fans, media, and even MLB they finally have begun drafting well, beginning with Alvarez. Will it matter or will the Nuttings just dump the young talent and keep the city hostage with a gorgeous ballpark that fields a minor league team is yet to be seen.

Lived here since 1975 and I for one have little faith and after the second "rebuilding project" went down the shitter around 2000 I quit watching, listening, or attending any of their games. I refuse to root for any other team either but I will not support an organization that has no desire to win.

Hopefully times have changed but they have to prove it to me this time before I spend any time or money on their product.

Agreed they are dumb for putting more money in the Nuttings pocket but you also have to understand that this city is sports crazy. I tell everyone I know not to watch or go to games. The Nuttings only understand money so cutting off their tap may, hopefully, either force a change in philosophy or force him to sell. He got himself a cash cow though so can't see him selling.

Thank God for the Penguins and the Steelers.

since they unloaded alot of talent the past 3 seasons
would like to think there is a nest egg to sign
Tabata, Walker, Alvarez and Mccutcheon to long term deals.
There still is zero pitching in the franchise and Lincoln at best
maybe a no. 3 starter.....

There is hope as I do not think they will trade any of the names above.
When they trade away the core of the team its very tough to be a fan.
However, I would rather root for a team with struggles than one with the
biggest bank account... Until the bucs day comes
Go Padres! Pretty amazing what they have done out there.

What a disgrace

Pirates have MADE almost $30 million the last two years. What incentive do they have to put that money back into the team?

That's the major problem with baseball. Teams like this making money and not putting any back into the franchise

sucks because they have a state of the art stadium and a very loyal fanbase.

seems like thats all they want to do is have people show up at the park and could care less about winning.

making trades like Aramis Ramirez & Kenny Lofton for Jose Hernandez & BOBBY HILL?!?!?!?!! should have given the owner and his henchmen the death sentence

"The Pirates organization is reportedly terrified that someone in the media has the goods on exactly where all that revenue-sharing, luxury tax and TV revenue is going. It's not the appropriate destination.

"If that ever spills, and the documentation is unassailable, the MLB players' association could protest. Ultimately, Major League Baseball could force the sale of the Pirates. Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are stil waiting in the wings.

"The story is expected to break this summer." - This blog, bitches. May 21, 2010.

The Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates admit to a $34.8 million profit over the last three seasons. The Post-Gazette also reports that the Pirates paid out $20.8 million to the team's ownership group in 2008. Approximately half of that covered taxes on profits. The other half was interest on a loan made by the Nuttings to the Pirates.

Can you function as your own loan shark? Not hatin'. Just askin'. But loans by the Nuttings to the Pirates - at who knows what interest rate? - could certainly serve as a convenient way for the Nuttings to suck cash out of the franchise.

Call the Nuttings good businessmen. Or call them con men and charlatans. Bottom line is, they're not the right owners for the Pirates. The Pittsburgh sports media needs to stop holding hands with the Nuttings, dig a little deeper and give MLB a case for forcing a sale.
