Rangers give mixed signals as bidding closes for Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish
Nolan Ryan was unable to attend the Texas Rangers’ annual holiday media luncheon Wednesday because of a meeting with the ownership group, a session that just happened to fall on the day that posting bids on Yu Darvish were due.
Jon Daniels was there, though the Rangers’ general manager took a phone call during lunch and conveniently, at least for him, was never seen again by media types seeking a word with him. Assistant GM Thad Levine just walked away backward with a suspicious look on his face. For a team that late Tuesday night didn’t know if it would submit a bid for Darvish, its personnel sure seemed like it might have been up to something ahead of the 5 p.m. EST deadline. At least one team submitted a bid, prompting Major League Baseball to notify the commissioner of the Japanese League of the amount of the highest bid but not the identity of the winning club. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Darvish’s team, have four days to decide if they will accept the bid. A decision is expected before the deadline, and the winning team will have 30 days to negotiate a contract with the 25-year-old Darvish. |

Supposedly 4 teams but in bids (NYY, Texas, Cubs, Toronto) and that the bids were suprisingly very good. Too much surreounding the Rangers to know their plans. Rumors that they are cash strapped due to $30 Mil buyout of Greenberg and the ballpark rennovations. Also rumors that TV deal was double the size that was advertised. Rumors that not seriously going after Buehrle and CJ was due to the fact they wanted Darvish. They did put in a bid though so we will see.

Cubs could be short some cash for both the Darvish and Fielder sweepstakes.. They just paid $20,000,000 for the Micky D's franchise across from Wrigley. This was Ozzie's favorite place to park when the W Sox played at Wrigley. There is an agreement that the franchise will always be there, which is good news for cash strapped visitors from Philly and Nashville when they come to Wrigley

Good for them..I heard a few days ago that the Bluejays had the highest bid. But maybe they used Canadian Dollars and their value dropped in the last few days.
