I will be content if Sox just grab one game in this series.
Getting swept while not ultimately changing their first place finish by the end of the season(unless they have a 1964 Phillies type of collapse and the Yankees win all of their remaining games), would be a bit disturbing as it would indicate as I have worried about all season, that most of the reason for their insurmountable lead has been their demolition of the have not teams rather than the good ones.

Now you folks who have read what I have written in this thread started by me almost a month ago hopefully know that know what I am talking about.
If you have not read the thread, all you have to do is read post one and you will capture the essence of my worries and concerns and why their still huge lead in the division and overall wins may be a bit suspect.

One other thing.
Imo no matter who the Sox play in the first or second round of the playoffs if they get there, they don't deserve be big favorite over any team they play in the AL no matter how much their record indicates therwise.
In fact if they a play the Astros, they could conceivably find themselves at even money or even a slight dog.

Me thinks Sox may have peaked and that Yankees may be peaking at the right time.

Nice and satisfying win last night to clinch first place.
That said, I remain convinced that the Sox's chances of going to the WS as the AL representative are no better than any of the other four contending teams, any of whom have the capability to defeat the Sox in first round or in the ALCS.

Its too bad that the Sox won't be able to duplicate what they are doing to the O's today in the playoffs against "slightly" better opponents.
If the O's are truly rebuilding, imo they will dismiss Showalter this coming Monday.
His age, style of managing and running the team in general are a throwback to another era, and imo he simply cannot relate to today's players in any way.
I think I read somewhere that is he is fired, that some high schools or colleges near where he lives might be interested in hiring him.
He might have a chance there as college and especially high school players who are more impressionable than players who have reached the major league level.

This may sound like I am handicapping a horserace, but here is my take on the Red Sox chances both in the ALDS, ALCS and WS if they ever get there:
Imo to have a decent chance to advance not only are they going to need good starting pitching but they are going to need to break out to a decent lead early(like a horse which needs to break well from the gate to have a good chance of winning).
If they do have a fairly good lead come say the 6th inning on, they will have a decent chance to win in spite of the very shaky middle relief guys.
If they are winning in a close game come the 6th and 7th inning on , are tied or behind, their chances for success decrease dramatically.
It is one thing to make unbelievable dramatic comebacks as they did against Atlanta but another against superior teams like Houston, Yankees, Oakland and Cleveland and if they should make it to the WS, whoever their opponent is(although as I have stated before, I believe the tougher hurdle will be getting to the WS.
To be fair though, the teams that they will be facing in the AL first and then hopefully in NL have their own set of problems-if they did not, the their record be as good as that of the Sox or conversely, if the Sox didn't have a lot of the strengths they do aside from the weakness of the bp, their record would not be as good as it is.
In short I hope the Sox win, but as they say, let the best team win no matter who it turns out to be.
ps To be clear, although he has been a little shaky of late, I have no problem with using Kimbrel to close things out or in a tied or tight game in which Sox are losing.

For some reason tonight's Sox Yankees game and actually entire series seem like a playoff game to me.
In reality though, other than for possible psychological reasons if Sox and Yankees should meet for keeps starting next week, the game makes next to nothing for Sox other than perhaps by so winning, it might force the Yankees to play Oakland away.
I think the chances of the latter happening are remote as Yankees have a two game advantage in the standings.

As I hinted at in one of these threads, I am all not that surprised that Yankees are winning big so far tonight for the simple reasons that 1) they are very hot;2) the game means a lot more to them than the Sox;3) no team including the Sox can afford to throw out borderline major league baseball pitchers like tonight against someone like Happ and expect to succeed against a powerful lineup like that of the Yankees.
It is only one game for sure, but as I stated also previously, if the Yankees sweep this series especially in the style they are tonight so far, imo if they get by Oakland, they will have a lot of momentum and confidence when they play the Sox in the first round of the playoffs.

ot Just curious as to whether there is ever a time during the game and for all we know when there is not a game, that Aaron Boone is not chewing a big wad of bubblegum and blowing those incessant childish bubbles?
In addition, does he realize that constant bubblegum chewing isn't exactly good for his teeth either??

My five star LOY is that if the Sox play the Yankees in the first round(and probably Oakland too) and they don't turn things around within the next week, it will be another three and out in the first week for them with a sweep a distinct possibility!!
That great regular season record is nice to think about, but cleaning up the dreck in baseball doesn't translate into winning against the good teams when it really counts!

I know some may scoff at this notion, but imo psychologically speaking this is an important game for the Sox to try to win.
Getting swept at home by the Yankees and then with a good chance of playing them again in the playoffs starting next Friday is not the ideal way to head into the playoffs.

I changed my mind about the Dodgers being the only team in the NL with any chance to win the WS.
I have switched my pick to Milwaukee, although I would bet my money on any of the five current contenders in AL to beat them also if forced to choose.

Imo fwiw there will be at least two first round sweeps and a decent chance that none of the series go the full five games.
For me the series with the best chance to go the route is the Cleveland/Houston series with the Dodgers and Braves series the least chance to go the full five games.

Hawks-you are asking the wrong person.
Even though someone accused me of being the ultimate homer in the forum, you would know if you have read some of my previous posts that if anything I am always pessimistic about the Sox chances in playoff games especially against the Yankees.
If you had been a Sox fan as long as I have you would realize all of the hurt the Yankees have inflicted over the Sox in big games with 2004 being the huge exception.
In direct answer to your question, from what I just stated and with reasons from past posts, I am worried and don't believe that the Sox deserve to be favored by what they are tonight and for series.
Ok with that said, imo for the Sox to have a decent chance of winning tonight, imo they have to jump up out early to a quick lead and put the Yankees on the defensive
They have had a fantastic record this season when scoring first.
Sale's health and ability to go far into game as well as Happ's outstanding record since becoming a Yankee.
Imo the Yankees are one of the hottest teams in baseball and just won 4-6 from Sox of late.
The Sox didn't play that great of late, part of the reason being that a few players were rested and because of the general letdown because of their insurmountable lead down the stretch.
Sorry for going on so long, but that is how I see it.
That said and to be fair, probably more times than not when I have shown pessimism about the Sox, I have tended to be wrong. lol
As I stated yesterday, imo whoever wins this game is either going to sweep the series or win in four games.
A five game series going to the wire Hollywood style seems great, but I just don't see it playing out this way.
Good luck whatever you do tonight.
ps I placed a fair small wager on Yankees to win the series to compensate a little for the hurt I will feel-If I lose and Sox win, the happiness felt will more than compensate for the relatively small amount wagered.

Yes but now the real adventure begins with the shaky bullpen.
This game is not over by a long shot!
Told ya-5-1 just like that and threatening for more!
I hope for your sake the game ends up 5-4 meaning you win your bet and I win my over.

I know one thing-no matter how this game ends up, I am playing the OVER again tomorrow with Price going; he has been clobbered quite a few times by the Yankees over the last few years including this one and usually early in the game.

Barnes-yuck!
If the Yankees don't get at least two runs this inning if not tie it or even take the lead, I will be surprised and quite content.

I take back 100% about what I said about whoever wins the first game winning this series in a sweep or in four.
The Sox won, but what is apparent to me is that
1) Yankees middle relief is superior to that of Sox.
2) The Yankees have a big advantage in the tail end of the lineup.
3) If the Red Sox starters don't get it done early like Sale did tonight, they are going to be in big trouble.
