I don't get this one. Didn't Beltre have like one good year & then he be one of the biggest busts ever in Seattle? Maybe I'm missing something

2010: $9 million

2011: $5 million player option or $1 million buyout.

The Red Sox have agreed on a deal with third baseman Adrian Beltre, a source told the Globe. The deal is for one year with Beltre holding an option for the second year.

Peter Gammons is reporting that Beltre would be paid $9 million in 2010. The option would be worth $5 million. In essence, it's a two-year deal with an opt-out after one year.

At that rate -- an average of $7 million a year -- it's an easy deal for the Sox to make and gives them a tremendously strong defensive infield along with some more power in their lineup.

Long-term, this suggests they do not believe thay can pry Adrian Gonzalez away from the Padres any time soon. It also would seem to indicate that Mike Lowell will either play off the bench or be traded.

UPDATE, 8:09 p.m.: More details on the deal:

2010: $9 million

2011: $5 million player option or $1 million buyout.

So it's either one year for $10 million or two for $14 million. Either way, that's a fairly economical deal for the Red Sox and gives them a solid lineup for 2010 with flexibility going beyond that.

yes, both my dad and I were talking when i was home over Xmas that we didnt want this guy anywhere near our team.

i guess the only positive is that he has played in two VERY big pitchers parks in LAD and SEA and now coming to Fenway with the wall.

other than that...it tells me they really have NO FAITH in Mike Lowell

Yeah Lowell is done so probably is an upgrade. He probably will hit better at Fenway. Orioles probably win AL East anyway. Shark just shit . Lol

Sox will have their best defensive team in my lifetime, bar none.

That to go with one of the best rotations in baseball and what was the #1 pen in the game last year as well Theyll score enough to get in

beltre, save for last year and 2004, has been a .275 23 80 guy, with GG defense

maybe overpaid a little this year, but if he performs on par and they pick him up for another year its about right

Don't really like the signing, but an upgrade from Lowell. He'll be a decent hitter in one of the bottom spots.

The Sox just traded Kotchman for Bill Hall.

Adrian Beltre is a great sign. An absolute steal.

His bat is more than adequate for the hot corner but he eclipses nearly everyone with his glove.

Unfortunately people dont seem to think that a run prevented is more valuable than a run produced.

Defense often gets overlooked but its one of the best ways to make a decent staff elite....a bad staff decent.

Red Sox already have a great rotation and pen and a guy like this at 3b is worth his weight in gold.

He could take a few more walks but on the flip side hes not a huge KO guy either. 25/90/90 and his defense.....trust me he is a bargain.

Great defender and dead pull hitter.

I think he fits perfect for the Sox and Fenway.

Yes overpaid, but who isn't. IMO at the end of the year people will be looking back saying how great this signing was.
