Redsox Jump into Halladay bidding

Report: Red Sox offer Buchholz, Bowden in package for Halladay

Might the Red Sox be serious players in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes after all?

Old friend Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports this afternoon reported that the Red Sox offered at least three players -- pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden and outfielder Ryan Westmoreland -- to the Blue Jays for Halladay, according to an unnamed source.

Edes speculates that, because the Blue Jays are looking for a shortstop (they are shopping current shortstop Marco Scutaro), the Red Sox might be trying to bring a third team into the negotiations to satisfy that need.

Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi has set a personal deadline of today to deal Halladay, though he recently said that was not set in stone.

The 24-year-old Buchholz, who pitches tonight, is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in two starts for the Red Sox this season after tearing through Triple-A Pawtucket earlier this season. The 22-year-old Bowden is 3-5 with a 3.09 ERA for the PawSox. The 19-year-old Westmoreland has six homers and 21 RBIs to go along with a .279 average in 32 games for the Single-A Lowell spinners.

Edes believes that the Sox' offer to the Jays is comparable to the package Toronto was seeking from the Phillies: rookie lefthanded pitcher J.A. Happ, pitching prospect Kyle Drabek, and outfield prospect Dominic Taylor. According to Edes, the Phillies have balked at the inclusion of Drabek.

Edes also notes in the report that Daniel Bard and 19-year-old Casey Kelly (both a pitching and shortstop prospect) have been declared off-limits by the Red Sox in trade talks.
