Report: Phils have deal in place for Oswalt

Mark Berman of Houston's FOX 26 heard from sources Wednesday that the Astros have a deal in place with the Phillies for Roy Oswalt and are waiting on the right-hander to waive his no-trade clause.
The two sides have agreed on the amount of money that will be exchanged and the players that will head to Houston, according to the report. With those crucial steps covered, we now wait on Oswalt to decide if he wants to spend the next year-plus in Philadelphia. He has a 3.42 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 120 strikeouts in 129 innings this season for the fifth-place Astros.

This would be a huge deal for the Phillies IMO as it would enable them to slot down Blanton and Happ to the back of the rotation and allow them to compete 1-3 with any team in the NL. Its obvious Oswalt still has tons in the tank and all this deal does is basically prove how big of a mistake Amaro Jr. made in the offseason trading away Cliff Lee

I wouldnt go that far but this move puts them on the same level as the Braves and other Wild Card contenders if Oswalt accepts the deal.

Im still amazed how Oswalt says he wants to be traded to a contender one day and then the next hes saying he wont go anywhere unless his 2012 is picked up.

Which is it Roy? Money or playoff hopes....obviously he wants both but if you ask me I think he would rather have the cash and pitch for Houston. Oswalt hasnt had a season this good in quite some time and obviously wants to parlay it into a guarunteed 2012 payday.

Braves are a good team they didn't totally surprise me I figured they be decent this year, but not this good. I just don't know if they are built to hold on to the division.

Obv talent wise the Phillies are the best team in the NL, their back end of the rotation in just bad, real bad right now, and Utley is still out, Victorino got hurt doing nothing, Rollins is hurt again.

Ibanez is starting to finally hit, Werth might be coming around. Pieces might be coming together for a 3rd straight WS appearance.

This should def end Werth's run in Philly doubt they can afford to resign him but it's time for Brown to play regularly next year and no one will take Ibanez in the winter

You canadians must not watch much baseball. Oswalt is an elite player playing for a team with the worst offense in baseball. Just like Nolan did before him. His record is not indicative of what a good pitcher he is. I can't understand Philly balking at picking up the option for 2012. This guy with the Philly offense will kill.

No way is Oswalt an elite pitcher anymore & hasn't been for a couple of years. Not saying he's not a decent veteran but disagree with being elite

Roy has a 1.11 WHIP ratio and a .229 BA against and about a strikeout per inning. His defense behind him sucks with rookies and has beens like Carlos Lee. Put a good offense behind him and watch. The guy has been beaten down by no run support. Totally disagree on this one Jack. We'll see though.

I don't mean to slam on him cause he's a good pitcher playing for bad team as you said, I just wouldn't call him elite. He's a bit inconsistent if you ask me. When he's on his game, he's as good as anyone - I'll give you that.

Good move for the Phillies though I think

oswalt has had absolutely no run support and his ERA is still in the 3s pitching in a park that maybe more hitter friendly the Citizens. The one question I have is his heart. he has been pitching in basically a baseball purgatory where noone cares and the media will give u a pass. It wont be like that up here.

Love Roy obviously and will be rooting for the Phillies even more now. Was a Lidge fan and hated to see him go too. Hope Roy gives you the same results Brad did that first year.
