Rudy NYC Sports Play of the Day -04/05/10

10:05 PM EDT
925 Seattle Mariners – F Hernandez -121
926 Oakland A’s – B Sheets
The play: Seattle Mariners -121 (3 units)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(NOTE: we played this early at -121; it is now -125 to 130 and moving upwards)

Where do we start on this one? OK, the A’s cut Jack Cust. Not a household name you say, only the A’s home run leader the last three years. The effect of this cut is a young team with limited talent starting the season with low morale. Today they face Felix Hernandez, last year’s Cy Young runner-up. Felix is coming off a sharp spring and seems ready to continue where he left off last year. The A’s throw Ben Sheets, another thrower coming off surgery. Big Ben got shelled most of the spring but showed improvement in his last two outs. It will not be enough against Felix. As for the lineups, the A’s have one of the weakest power lineups in the majors. Don’t get me wrong, the Mariners have only a decent lineup at best, but they look like an All-Star team against the A’s. If this were not Opening Day, this would have been a 5unit play. Play this one for 5 innings and full game, too. Felix laying 130 is a steal!

Evan: What? One name? ONE NAME!?!? Who are you? Seal?
Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

me too. But I plan on sitting on the sidelines for the first few weeks. Every year I say I am going to wait (for the stats I like to look at to start taking shape) and every year I jump the gun (inevitably with only so-so early season results).

Spent ten days in Florida visiting most of the Grapefruit camps and have a real feel after following preseason this year.

The old rule of thumb was, never make a baseball wager until Memorial Day, then it became May 1, now it is April 15. Doesn't phase me, I am stepping right in!

Part of the reason for that is in the old days when they broke camp and started the season the pitchers were so much further ahead than the hitters but with how well these guys now train the hitters are actually ahead of the pitchers now coming out of spring ball. Nice time of the year to hit some overs as well with starters not yet sharp and more of a chance to catch what normally is the weakest part of alot of teams their bullpens to get you some late runs when needed.

I agree on all points. Your OVER theory, let me add that it is unusually warm in many cold weather venues. Should help the run production. Hence, I am on the OVER in Arlington (also, Feldman started 3-0 to the OVER last year).

Added play:

7:05 PM EDT
915 SF Giants – T Lincecum -124 (Current line as of 4:14 EST -137)
916 Houston Astros – R Oswalt
The play: SF Giants -124 (2 units)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s get this out there early. The SF Giants are a lot better and will go much further than the press recognizes. We are not saying they will capture the NL pennant or even win their division but this team has very few weaknesses. They have perhaps the best starting rotation headed by today’s starter, Tim Lincecum. The Giants have a tremendous amount of momentum coming out of a magnificent preseason which will carry through to the early season. Today’s matchup, with Cy Young Award winner, Lincecum, vs. a suspect Roy Oswalt, at this price is a steal. Jump on this one early as the price should rise into the minus 130’s.
