SportSpies: Tuesday MLB Insider Report - 8/10

Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers are 18-7 against the Diamondbacks since 2007, which marks their highest winning percentage against any NL team over that stretch. -Milwaukee is 5-3 this month after posting a 14-13 record in June and 13-14 mark in July. -SP Manny Parra is 1-0 with a 0.86 ERA in four games (three starts) against Arizona.

Washington Nationals: The Nationals are 9-3-2 in series play at Nationals Park dating to April 23. Washington has posted a .500-or-better record at home every month this season. -Team has homered in nine straight games. -SP Stephen Strasburg is just the second pitcher to strike out five or more and allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his first nine big league starts.

Philadelphia Phillies: Since July 22, the Phillies have posted the best record in the majors at 14-3. In that 17-game span, Philadelphia has outscored their opponents 89-54. -Over that past six seasons, manager Charlie Manuel has guided his team to an NL-best 233-155 record in games after the All-Star break. -SP Kyle Kendrick is 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA in three starts since being recalled from Triple-A.

New York Mets: -The Mets went 3-3 on their last homestand and are 33-19 overall at home, which is the sixth-best winning percentage in the majors (.635). -SP Mike Pelfrey is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA over his past seven starts. He has allowed 16 first inning runs in his last 11 starts. -New York is 17-18 in the first game of the series.

Tampa Bay Rays: This road trip started the Rays on a stretch of 22 of 34 games on the road. Despite losing the first three games, Tampa still owns the majors best road record at 34-20. -Tampa Bay is 24th in the majors in batting (.251), but third in runs scored (561). -This season the Rays are an AL-best 23-10 against the Central division.

Cincinnati Reds: The Reds have won four of their last five games and are 11-1-1 in their previous 13 series and 6-0-1 in seven completed series since the All-Star break. -Beginning on June 17, the Reds have posted a 2.94 team ERA, which is second-best in the majors over that span (CHW). -SP Johnny Cueto is 5-0 with a 1.55 ERA in eight starts since a June 18 loss.

Chicago Cubs: The Cubs look to snap a season-high six-game road losing streak, dating back to July 27. The club is batting .217, while posting an 8.40 ERA over that span. -SP Ryan Dempster is 3-7 with a 4.11 ERA in 21 career games (11 starts) versus the Giants, including a 1-0 mark and 2.57 ERA in two starts last season.

Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox have won seven of their last 11 road games and have a 22-16 record away from Fenway Park since May 22. -SP Daisuke Matsuzaka owns six career wins versus Toronto, his most versus any opponent and his three career victories at the Rogers Centre is his most at any MLB ballpark outside of Fenway.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers enter tonight’s game against Tampa Bay having won 12 of the club’s last 20 games versus the Rays at Comerica Park. -1B Miguel Cabrera has hit safely in 21 of his last 25 games at Comerica Park dating back to June 18. -Detroit SP Max Scherzer is 6-4 with a 2.61 ERA over his last 13 starts.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Pittsburgh enjoyed a day off on Monday, after going 3-3 over their last six games, following a five-game losing streak. The Pirates have gone 5-12 in their last 17 games.The team is 5-11 in a stretch against teams with a winning record. In the first four series, the Pirates were swept by the Padres in three games, took two of three in Colorado and were swept in a three-game set in St. Louis.

Toronto Blue Jays: The team is 2-7 versus the Red Sox this season and are 11-24 against them since the middle of the 2008 season. -Toronto is 26-13 in its last 39 home games and have outscored the opposition by 76 runs over that span. -Lead the majors with 99 home runs at home this season and 175 total.

Houston Astros: Prior to the All-Star break, the Astros posted a .238 team batting average and averaged 3.45 runs per game. In the 22 games since the break, the club is hitting .286 with 5.77 runs per game. -Over the last 10 games, Houston has outscored opponents 84-46. -SP J.A. Happ hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his five starts against the Braves.

Atlanta Braves: -The Braves have won 29 of their last 38 home games dating back to May 18. Atlanta has lost just one series at home this season (April 20-22). -Hitters have combined for 11 home runs in their last six games, while the pitching staff has limited opponents to just one homer in that span. -SP Jair Jurrjens is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in six home starts and 3-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 17 career outings vs NL Central.

Florida Marlins: The Marlins are coming off a 1-4 homestand in which they dropped three games to the Phillies and split two against the Cardinals. -Florida is 22-22 against divisional opponents this season. -SP Anibal Sanchez is 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA in 10 career starts versus Washington. In his career, he has no record and a 4.00 ERA in DC.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers are 22-30 on the road this year and 1-9 since the All-Star break away from Dodger Stadium. -Los Angeles is 10-13 against the NL East division this year. -Team is 2-10 at Citizens Bank Park since 2008, which includes five postseason games. -Starting rotation has a 2.45 ERA since July 17, the lowest mark in MLB.

Texas Rangers: The pitching staff’s 3.07 ERA since the All-Star break is 2nd-best in the AL behind only the Oakland A’s (2.90) and 4th-best in the majors. -The Rangers batted .234 on their recent road trip. -Texas 36-21 home record is 2nd-best in the AL and they have won both home series since the All-Star break.

Colorado Rockies: SS Troy Tulowitzki is batting .396 with a home run and 12 RBI in 12 games since he returned from the DL. -Colorado has dropped four straight series openers on the road and are just 5-13 in series openers away from Coors Field. -SP Ubaldo Jimenez is 7-0 at Coors Field and the team is 8-1 in his nine starts at home this season.

Minnesota Twins: -Team is batting .316 in its 24 games since the All-Star break, the highest batting average in the majors. Minnesota is 17-7 since the All-Star break, tied with San Francisco for the most wins over that span. -SP Scott Baker has a 8-4 career record and 3.33 ERA in 21 career starts in August.

St. Louis Cardinals: -The Cardinals are 8-5 versus the Reds this season, after going an even 8-8 in the series in 2009. -Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright are a combined 35-5 against NL Central clubs dating back to last season. -SP Jaime Garcia is 4-2 in seven starts with a 2.55 ERA versus the NL Central this season.

Cleveland Indians: -Have eight rookies on their active roster, with the Cubs being the only other MLB team with at least that number. -The Indians are 13-11 since the All-Star break with all games being played against winning opponents. -The bullpen has posted a 2.96 ERA over its last 115.2 innings of work.

Baltimore Orioles: -The Orioles are coming off a 6-1 homestand, their best of the year and their best seven-game homestand since 2004. -Baltimore is just 18-46 at Progressive Field since 1994. -Lineup is 22-for-60 with RISP in the last seven games. -Baltimore has scored four or more runs in 10 of Jake Arrieta’s 11 starts.

New York Yankees: -The Yankees went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Monday. -SS Derek Jeter is batting .344 in August after combining to hit just .244 over the previous two months. -New York’s 32-22 record on the road this season is the second-best road mark in the majors. -Team is 10-4 in their last 14 games against left-handers.

Oakland Athletics: -The Athletics are 22-15 since June 25, which is the 5th-best record in the AL over that span. -Starting staff is 4-2 with a 1.80 ERA and .185 opponents batting average in the last seven games. -Oakland leads the season series 6-4 over Seattle, including a 1-3 mark at Safeco. -Team has gone 0-for-35 with runners in scoring position since Friday.

San Diego Padres: -In the 46 games the Padres have played following a loss this year, they have gone 31-15 and have only lost three consecutive games once. -SP Wade LeBlanc’s 2.67 home ERA is the ninth-best mark in the NL, as the team is 6-5 in his 11 home starts. -LeBlanc has received 3.22 runs of support on average this season, 3rd-lowest in the majors.

Seattle Mariners: -The Mariners have won two straight and are 4-3 during the current homestand. -Over its past four games, the bullpen has allowed just one run and five hits in 10.2 innings (0.84 ERA). -In SP Felix Hernandez’s nine losses this season, the team has combined to score nine runs.
