What would Jeter deserve if he wasn't Mr. Yankee

I know he's going to get a substantial contract because of his storied career with the Yankees and I'm not a Yankee fan, but would like to see him spend his whole career there.

On just his ability, what would his contract be? I think he started to show some real signs of decline last year

Would give him 3 years $24 million just on ability

What you think?

Lets not forget Juan Uribe just got 21 Mill for 3 years, so I gotta think Jeter would be worth 24.

Considering he's in the bottom 3rd of SS in the league when it comes to his D and his offensive numbers are decreasing, I would say he is worth about 6 mil a year right now and wouldn't give him more than a 2 year deal. Juan Uribe getting what he got is just stupid.

He was never much of a glove man, (gold glove this year a joke) Got the reputation of being a good defender because of some great plays in the playoffs.

6 mil is ridiculous with the revenue he would bring in. He should have accepted the deal though cause hes not worth 15 mil

The Yankees are paying for past performance. Which is fine, since they can afford it.

But if Derek Jeter were Derek Smith, a 37 yr old SS entering free agency from the Royals, he'd be getting something like 2/18 going into his decline years.

As far as the revenue he's bringing in, I don't think that if the Yankees suddenly decided to go with a different free agent SS (let's say they'd signed Juan Uribe for the same money as he got in LA, 3/21), that the Yankees attendance or ability to generate income would be adversely changed due to the absence of Jeter.

One last thing, if 3/45 really, truly were a reasonable amount, why were there no other offers out there?

One poster on another website came up with a conspiracy theory that went something like this:

The Yankees didn't vote for Derek Jeter for the GG, but a bunch of other teams did (including Boston), knowing it would ultimately make it harder for the Yankees to sign him at a reasonable amount.

I tend to doubt it, but I'd love to see who voted for whom for the GG.
