Why do teams like the Pirates and Royals even exist?

Not trying to start anythign with any fans here, but as along as i can remember these clubs have been perrenial losers and never make moves to improve.

Not only them but there are plenty of teams out there with lame duck owners who seem to be running a farm team for the contenders out there. They groom these prospects into studs, then trade them for more prospects and start all over.

They never get anywhere.

This is the problem with baseball. Pretty soon the Marlins and Rays will go back to the shitter soon and will the Nats ever grow into a contender?

This is one of the things that irks the shit out of me with baseball.

You could lump the Jays in there too, I guess.

But the Pirates were decent in the 90's. In '92 they lost to Atlanta in the NLCS. They were at least contending back then. Andy Van Slyke, Bobby Bonilla, some kid named Bonds.

Marlins and Rays have 2 of the best scouting and player development departments in the league good try tho. everyone knows pirates nationals and royals are headed in the right direction. why do you even bother?

not really a coincidence the weaker teams continued to get weaker once the payrolls started going way up

are you kidding me?

Im not saying anything about drafting and scouting prospects. Im talking about keeping them.

of course they have good scouting departments but they cant keep any of the prospects once they bloom and prosper. im not "trying" anything just creating converstaion.

if conversing is too much for you to handle then you may exit out of this thread.

There's no way you can just get rid of a team anymore, let alone 4. They missed the oppurtunity in 2001 to do it. Too many players and too much money. There would have to be a draft of 100 MLB players and like 1600 minor leaguers. You can't just make them all free agents. And how are these new teams supposed to pay all these new players

They need to put some type of hard salary cap on the league to even the playing field. I don't think contraction is the answer (although wouldn't hurt to cut a few teams out of every league) as the bigger market teams will still outspend the others.

There are plenty of owners who spend a lot of money and don't get anywhere in this league as well. Baseball more than most other sports is highly dependent on the system as a whole. Takes more than bringing in one player and coach to change the makeup of the organization.

im not saying get rid of a team, im just saying there are way too many teams with no real chance of building their franchise to a level to compete year in and year out, its a serious flaw.

To fix the problem in baseball you have to slot the draft

45th round picks can't be getting 1mm signing bonuses

So what should the cap be?

Most teams won't be anywhere near the cap anyway
