Yankees make their move ...

Yankees are closing in on a two-year deal with infielder DJ LeMahieu. New York plans to use him as a versatile player around the infield ... using him at second base, first base and third base.

LeMahieu hit .348 and won a batting title with Colorado in 2016. His slash line was .276/.332/.428 last season. The Yans value him for his defense and his versatility.

With this addition, it's another indication that the Yankees appear unlikely to sign Machado

Last season he ranked second among all second baseman in defensive runs saved. He has played 892 career games at second, 41 at third (none since 2014) and four at first (again, none since 2014)

Guy is a right-handed hitter that doesn’t offer pop or big-time on-base skills. His defense is great, but that’s basically all of his value.

The Yankees sold fans on their plan to get under the luxury tax for YEARS so that they could sign Machado or Harper. For them to walk away empty-handed is embarrassing.

By my criterion he helps the Yank's chances more next season that Machado would have.

I am not a Machado guy either. He is a me guy. Attitude in the clubhouse is a big thing. 10 years could kill a club on the long term. Did not want him in St. Louis either. Much rather have Harper. Your OF with Judge and Stanton is solid. Build around those guys.

Stanton is not going to be around too much longer.

I'm not saying Machado was the answer in NY but they are now paying $20m a year for a utility outfielder and infielder in Gardner & LeMahieu.

For a few million more they could have locked up a platinum glove infielder, who without a doubt improves an already championship caliber team.

Hal is a fucking idiot.

I fuckin hate machado. He is the biggest cunt in baseball. I don't think he is a good clubhouse guy either. Maybe it would have been great for the rivalry but this guy choked on his own cock in LA too, especially when the spotlight was the brightest. I wish nobody would sign him.

I agree, he is a douchebag / dirty player

But to say LeMahieu helps the Yankees chances more next season than Machado just more proof what a dummy this old man is.

I think the Yankees are good enough to win it all without doing a thing. I heard Kluber may still be on the block. If they ever made that move, holy hell.

For decades, literally decades, the Yankees have spent around 50% of revenue on payroll

2017 = 36% (lowest in MLB)
2018 = 30% (lowest in MLB)

They can improve the club greatly by adding either Harper or Machado but choose not to.

Everybody (especially sportswriters) need to stop repeating the Yankees bullshit about “payroll concerns" ... It's actually "profit concerns"

The Yankees priorities have totally shifted. It's no longer championship or bust ... Now it's how much profit can we make while still being competitive.

Lets just say that I got to where I am in life(and am proud of it) by being able to/wanting think on many levels rather than just one as is the case with many folks, in order to arrive at my conclusions.
And yes a lot of my thoughts including evaluations of players have to do with imperceptibles/intangibles that most people don't wish to consider.
Whether these are right, wrong, unprovable or irrelevant is the reason that many folks either don't agree with me on many issues and/or scoff at my way of thinking and in some cases such as the author of this thread, this results in attempted bullying, name calling and insults-for me that speaks volumes about the person(s) who stoop to this level.

Conversely more proof as to certain folks who cannot/refuse to rely on anything but empirical statistics on the field.
Best example of this is the Yankee ownership/FO which until fairly recently cared no matter how much money they spend, on trying to acquire the best talent only with no consideration as to how these players and the rest of the team would form a cohesive unit.
I praise Hal in this signing for looking at things in more than a one dimensional way.
When and if Machado and whoever wins a WS and he is a big contributor to his team's success, please wake me up if I am still alive that is. lol

After 2 seasons, the only committed money the Yankees will have on the books is $29M for Stanton, and maybe $17M for the last year of Chapman (if he doesn't opt out of 2/34 after 2019). Judge, Severino & Sanchez will still be 2 more years away from FA ... 3 for Andujar ... 4 for Torres.

They already did the incredibly hard part. They hit on most of their prospects and they have them for cheap for the next several years ... The front office needs to wake up, Now is the time to make the most of their championship window.

Imo most likely it is nothing more than a planted false rumor by Machado and his camp to drive up the price.

LeMahieu nothing but class and a good player ( groomed well at LSU with Burtman). He will be a compliment to any team he lands with. So I take it you wont draft Muchado in the Fant Baseball LG?
