A 4 Team Playoff May Be Coming
The chances of a 4 team playoff to decide the BCS Championship just got a major boost when NCAA President Mark Emmert baccked the idea. According to CBSSports.com "After giving his annual state of the association speech Thursday in Indianapolis, Emmert acknowledged he would back a small playoff if that's what Bowl Championship Series officials decide to adopt. "The notion of having a Final Four approach is probably a sound one."
Now how teams would qualify for this ramains a huge question. If the system were in use this season, then both Alabama and Stanford would have qualified, and both of those teams did NOT win their Conference Championships. They did not even play for them. The question now becomes what to do with Conference Championships. This past season proved that Conference Championships are basically meaningless. Two 3 loss teams played in the Orange Bowl. Two teams that did not win their Conference Championships played in the Sugar bowl. So do you restrict the 4 team playoff to Conference Champions, or do you take the best 4 teams, no matter what Conference they come from.
This will be the major question that will hae to be answered by the NCAA Presidents for the playoff to happen. It could start immediately, but probably would not start until 2014. Thoughts guys?
