7 Wins To Be Bowl Eligable?
This is what the NCA is discussing now. The rash of 6-6 teams and the huge number of mediocre to poor bowl games is affecting attendance and T.V. ratings. Many of the schools are on board to froce a team to actually have a winning season to be bowl eligable. ESPN is dead set against it.
The reason why ESPN is against this is because they own many of the minor bowls that invite 6-6 teams to play in them. ESPN owns the New Mexico, Texas, Compass and Beef 'O Brady's bowls to name 4. All of those bowls would most likely go by the wayside if 6-6 teams were not allowed to play in bowl games.
A better solution may be this. Do not count ANY FCS wins as eligable wins towards bowl games. This past season, Arizona State, Florida, Illinois, Iowa State, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Pitt, Purdue, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest all became bowl eligable and went to bowl games because of wins against an FCS team. Miami also was eligable, but turned down a bowl invite. That is a total of 12 teams, or 6 bowl games.
By eliminating FCS wins, you force teams to play a better level of competition, making the regular season more interesting, and putting more legitimacy into the minor bowl games. Since it is highly unlikely that ESPN will be willing to give up any of their post season bowl games, this seems to be the best way to go. They still may get a lot of 6-6 teams to play, but at least the 6-6 record will be a lot more legitimate.
