Confirmed by a local paper.

WVU's 'Truck' Bryant out indefinitely
by Mike Casazza
Daily Mail sports writer

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- West Virginia arrived in Syracuse by plane Tuesday and took a bus to the team's hotel, but the Mountaineers will be without a Truck for the remainder of the season.

Starting point guard Darryl "Truck" Bryant suffered a serious injury to his right foot in practice Tuesday just before the team left campus, sources told the Daily Mail. While the exact nature of Bryant's injury is not yet clear, he is "definitely out" for the Mountaineers (29-6), seeded second in the West Region, in Thursday's 7:27 p.m. Sweet Sixteen game against No. 11 seed Washington in the Carrier Dome.

"He's not even sure how it happened," said one person, who called it a "freak" occurrence.

Bryant, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Brooklyn, N.Y., started 31 games this season, including the past 23 after coming off the bench for four games early in the season as WVU opted for a starting lineup with five forwards. He averaged 9.3 points and had 108 assists to 71 turnovers while shooting 34.6 percent from the floor and 31.5 percent form 3-point range.

Bryant, who shot 37.7 percent from 3-point range as a freshman, struggled the past six game games and totaled only 14 points. He missed his final 12 3-point attempts of the season and 24 of 28, but did make two important layups in the second half of Sunday's second-round victory against No. 10 seed Missouri.

Bryant will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Joe Mazzulla, whose shoulder injury last season ushered Bryant into the starting lineup.

WVU has no other point guards on its roster, but Coach Bob Huggins has shown he doesn't mind playing stretches with forwards or with Da'Sean Butler or Devin Ebanks at point.

Mazzulla has only seven starts in his career and none in the Big East or NCAA tournaments. His last start was Dec. 9, 2008 against Davidson. He played only six minutes and didn't play again last season before undergoing surgery two months later and taking a medical redshirt.

The 6-2 junior from Johnston, R.I., had a long recovery from an injury many considered to be a career-ender, but has been healthy for a few weeks now.

He's averaging only 14.9 minutes per game, but has played 24, 29, 22 and 24 minutes the past four games. Mazzulla has 78 assists and 33 turnovers, but 21 and seven during the team's eight-game winning streak.

Mazzulla's rise is "perfect timing," a source said, because Bryant's injury comes at an awful time for WVU. The Huskies (26-9) have won six in a row and are led by 5-8 sophomore point guard Isaiah Thomas, who averages 17.1 points - second on the team - and 3.1 assists.

No. 1 seed Kentucky could be waiting for the winner in the regional final and the Wildcats (34-2) are led by freshman point guard John Wall. The 6-4 Wall averages a team-high 16.8 rebounds plus 4.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists.
