Yeah I would approve, hopefully jeff grayer as assistant coach also - had just joined mcdermott's staff -

I was curious if there was a reason grayer came on the staff like 4 days b4 mcdermott left

The Mayor is finally coming home

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5140900

Iowa native Fred Hoiberg is returning home to coach Iowa State's men's basketball program, ABC5 Sports reported Tuesday.

Hoiberg, a Cyclone alum and star player at Ames (Iowa) High School in the early '90s, replaced Greg McDermott. McDermott left to fill the vacancy at Creighton University after Dana Altman was hired by Oregon.

Iowa State spokesman Steve Malchow said Tuesday the school is in negotiations with Hoiberg.

Hoiberg was the Vice President of Basketball Operations with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and played 10 seasons in the NBA with three different teams after being drafted by the Pacers in the second round of the 1995 draft.

McDermott coached at Iowa State for four years after leading Northern Iowa to three straight NCAA tournament appearances.

Hoiberg spent three years as the Wolves' assistant general manager after retiring from the NBA in 2006. He played four years at Iowa, finishing third in school history in scoring (1,993 points), first in 3-point field goals made (183) and third in steals (207).

Hoiberg was named Iowa's top high school football and basketball player and won a Iowa state basketball championship in his senior year at Ames.

Iowa State never won more than 15 games under McDermott and has not reached the NCAA tournament since 2005.

No financial details were immediately available but Iowa State paid McDermott $900,000 last year.

This is interesting news. No coaching experience but gets head gig at Big 12 school. Always liked Hoiberg very well but don't think Houston worked out to well when they went with Clyde Drexler as head coach.

he was an assistant coach for the TWolves for 2 years I think (maybe 1 or 3, somewhere in there) and has been in their front office for several years also. Def not the same as head coaching experience, but at Iowa State its at least soemthing to be excited about lol

I thought he was strictly in the front office. Didn't think he coached at all but I could be wrong there.

yeah when he first retired he was an assistant - like i said, it may have only been a year, but he did start on the bench. either way, it's little to no coaching experience

maybe unlike drexler, hoiberg has always come across as the type of guy that would make a good coach, just turned out to be a better player than alot thought, and had a 10 year nba career. had to retire due to heart surgery. was always that type of guy with a high basketball iq and fit the mold of a future coach.

on the other hand, i wish he would have went and coached somewhere else, and worked his way up like most guys have to - and get some experience. but when youre iowa state, you dont get to be picky - and im grasping at something to be excited about LOL

if nothing else, i think we have 2 guys as coaches in foots and hoops now that WANT to be at iowa state, so that's a good start
