Happy 25th Birthday

Twenty-five years ago, college basketball greeted the 3-point shot with disdain. Some coaches called it a "Mickey Mouse rule." It's hard to think where the game would be without it. The 3-pointer can be the great equalizer, especially in the NCAA Tournament.

Now, if they would just outlaw the dunk and make the players actually shoot the ball.

Cuse, I saw Pete play once at Georgia. He hung 50 something on the Dogs.

The guy was amazing....especially his passing (when he passed).

He would shoot from anywere....I think (not sure) he averaged 44 that season.

Pistol Pete was THE man. I don't remember watching him at LSU (hell, I'm not THAT old), but I certainly remember him in the NBA. Take away the dunk, and I dare say, he was the greatest scorer of all-time.

Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

Keith, I lived in Atlanta when he first came into the league with the Hawks. Got to see him play a number of times. He struggled during the early part of his career but came on strong later.

The most entertaining player I have ever seen play basketball. Loved Jordan and Bird, but Pete could put on a show.

Mule--there are a few fantastic highlight reel clips on YouTube. I read the most recent biography of him (came out about 2 years ago), which was very good. Somewhat of a tortured soul.

Pistol Pete baby

Cuse, you and Keith might be interested in this info.

Dale Brown, longtime head coach at LSU calculated that with the 3-point line, Maravick would have averaged 57 points per game for his college career. He averaged 44.2 scoring 43.8, 44.2 and 44.5. (freshman were not eligible for varsity back then)

Back in 1970, he hung 69 on my Bama team. He also hit Kentucky...repeat Kentucky for 64 one game. He scored 50 points or more 28 times.

He could shoot but man could he pass and dribble the ball. Boston Celtics legend John Havlicek said Maravick "was the best ball-handler of all time." Pretty damn strong coming from a guy like Havlicek.

His best season in the NBA was 1976-77 when he average 31.1 per game.
