I dont get this!

Why with less than 45 seconds in the 1st half does a team play for the last shot. What usually happens is they have to take a bad shot with no time left or turn it over. Its not like its the end of the game. Why dont they just keep playing the way they had been, I see this in almost every contest and very seldom will a team score????
