NCAA Tourney Tips

The Slop

If a team has trouble scoring, do you really want to be rooting for it if it's down eight with six minutes to go? Here are the 2010 NCAA Tournament Teams that scoredless than 68 points per game this year:

1. Winthrop, 62.4
2. Northern Iowa, 63.3
3. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 64.9
4. Temple, 65.4
5. Old Dominion, 67.5
6. Wisconsin, 67.9

Road Woes

Why would anyone ever have a team advancing deep into the tournament when it had trouble winning on the road in the regular season? These squads fall very quickly. Here are the 2010 NCAA Tournament Teams that couldn't win on the road this year:

Georgia Tech, 3 - 8
Ohio, 5 - 9
Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6 - 14
Oklahoma State, 3 - 7
Minnesota, 3 - 7
Notre Dame, 3 - 6
Winthrop, 6 - 11
Louisville, 4 - 7
Missouri, 4 - 6
Washington, 4 - 6
Wake Forest, 5 - 7
Clemson, 5 - 6
Mississippi State, 5 - 6
Texas, 5 - 6
UC-Santa Barbara, 6 - 7
Lehigh, 7 - 8

Freshman Point Guards

Do you really want some acne-ridden kid who had problems finding a prom date just a few months ago ruining your bracket? I think not. Freshman point guards seldom advance deep in the tournament. The only exception is if the player in question is a once-in-a-decade point guard prospect like Mike Conley and Derrick Rose. Here are the 2010 NCAA Tournament Freshman Point Guards in this years Big Dance:

D. J. Cooper, Ohio
Matthew Dellavedova, St. Mary's
Fred Gulley, Oklahoma St.
C. J. McCollum, Lehigh
John Wall*, Kentucky

Also worth noting is that 17 of the past 18 teams that have won the NCAA Tournament have shared these traits:

- Had a head coach who was with the team the year before.
- Scored 76 points per game.
- Out-scored their opponents by an average of at least 10 points.
- Had been seeded 1 - 4.
- Participated in the NCAA Tournament the year before.

Not that it matters but Montana has a TF pt guard, too. Will Cherry. It won't matter as they'll get thumped, was just sayin'.
