Should Sanctions follow a coach to a New School?
This is something that I think has to be looked into. And the one person that comes to mind is Calipari. He was at UMASS left and they had sanctions against them, at Memphis and there is/was an investigation going on at Memphis. I believe one time is ok but after that some kind of sanctions should follow a coach and that would be the baggage for hiring the coach.

It seems like the major infractions follow the coaches (i.e. Todd Bozeman and Kelvin Sampson). They will always be judged by the hiring administration for their past results/infractions.
The bottom line is guys like Calipari are always going to get jobs as they make money for the college and administrators. If the hoops team is winning one less thing the AD has to worry about in regards to keeping his job. |

Derrick Rose was cleared to play Division 1 College Basketball by the NCAA. Once he was cleared he was recruited by the likes of Bill Self at Kansas, Roy Williams at UNC, Coach K at Duke and yes Calipari at Memphis.
If the NCAA clears a player for eligibility and as a coach you successfully recruit him on to your campus how can they say you did anything wrong? Isn't the NCAA at fault for clearing the guy? Ask yourself this - what if Coach K would've landed Derrick Rose? |

A coach should at least have to sit out a year......

I think this addresses one of the biggest injustices in college sports -- the fact that a coach can do as he pleases but a player is more or less stuck at his school (with severe penalties if he tries to switch).
One interesting solution is to simply make a rule in NCAA basketball that says that whatever contract a coach signs must be honored by both the school and the coach. meaning...a coach cannot leave unless he is fired and paid his full amount. The coach cannot leave his team for any reason while under contract, except to retire. So.... If a coach gets a better offer, he cannot accept it until his contract is up. Players know who their coach is this way and know exactly how long he'll be there. If a coach gets fired, the school pays him in full and he is free to pursue other schools. If a coach retires, he can only return to NCAA coaching if the team he originally coached allows him back. If his position is filled, he can go elsewhere BUT the original team that held his contract still gets first crack as long as they bring him back by the beginning of the next full season. If the coach retires and has stayed retired for 5 or more years, he is free to go wherever he wants. |

I agree that they should look into allowing athletes to transfer (without sitting out 1 year) if the coach leaves (unless player transfers to coaches new program) the program.
Making the coaches honor their contract is pretty extreme given the school usually adds in a buy out if they opt out for a different job. Windows for some of these coaches are very limited and a young up and coming coach shouldn't be punished if he has an opportunity to increase his wage. I don't agree with guaranteed contracts for the coach. The school has to have the flexibility to fire him if he is not meeting their standards. If they were smart they would just make the contract more incentive based (give them bonuses for years of service, attendance, W-L record, revenue created by program) vs a higher base contract. Let's not forget a lot of the kids are getting a free education and have access to a lot more perks than the average college student. |

Memphis has to vacate their 38 win season from 2007-2008.

I have to respectfully disagree with if the coach leaves the player should be able to leave. In theory you are supposed to be choosing the school, hence student-athlete, you go to not the coach you go to.
