What is the difference between Sleeper and Cinderella

They were talkin about this yesterday on the Dan Patrick show tryin to classify Davidson as a Cinderella or Sleeper.

What are your definitions of a sleeper vs. cinderella.

I personally think Western Kentucky is the only cinderella story here. Why? Because they were not gonna make the tourney if they didnt win the Sun belt tourney. They won that, and are in the sweet 16. As for Davidson, its been a few years that people have been expecting them to do well. to me, they are a sleeper.

What do you guys think?

I would describe them as

Cinderella - any of the smaller schools would fit in this category. The fact they are still alive is a Cinderella story

Sleeper - A decent team who really hasn't been given much a chance but not really a cinderella

Example of Cinderella's - WKY, Davidson and even Nova

Example of Sleepers - WV, Xavier, Wisconsin or any of the bigger schools not predicted to win it or go very far

That's how I would describe it

I can agree with you that Davidson fits in Cinderella to some extents of my definition. Nova is the one that gets me. Are they a sleeper or cinderella? Because this is the 3rd time in 4 years they've made the sweet 16. They were in and out of the top 25 this year. People have expected them to have talent but they more or less sleptwalk. Now I could see it as a Cinderella for the fact that I don't think many people thought they deserved to get in the tourney. I sure did not think they deserved a bid, but since they are there and doing well I could see myself saying Cinderella. The part that I have trouble with is I think they are a sleeper because they have the talent but played below par til tourney time.

True, I was not sure about Villanova either but I think the fact they were a 12 seed has to make them a Cindarella more than a sleeper. However after looking at my definition - not sure they fit because they are not a small school and should not be in the Davidson/WKY group so now I don't know. lol

Could we classify memphis as a sleeper since pretty much everyone forgot about them? They have been given NO chance to win by almost all of the media and all the schmucks around me discussing their picks of UNC and UCLA....blah.

Memphis is not a sleeper, they lost what? 1 game all season or something. They didnt "underachieve".

I view it different a sleeper is more of a pregame label. You think this team has a chance at winning the game. Cinderella is more of a post game label - the team that delivers and actually lives the dream. Not all sleepers are cinderellas. Most cinderellas started as sleepers.

A sleeper is a team that is overlooked but can surprise you when you least expect it.

A cinderella is a team that is just waiting for the clock to strike 12 so that it can turn back into the pumpkin that it really is.
