2008 SCHEDULE , STRENGTH OF , FUTURE ODDS

While the dates and game times are yet to be determined, the home and away opponents are set.

The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

Under the formula, every team within a division plays 16 games as follows:
Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games).

The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games).
The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games).
Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (2 games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.

How in the world does it happen that the team that went undefeated in the 2007 regular season can turn around and have the easiest schedule the following year?

Some of you may be prone to think those dastardly Patriots have figured out another way to cheat, right? Well the NFL sets up these schedules on a rotating basis concerning the non-divisional games. Here is how:

Each team has a 16 game regular season schedule. Of these games there is annually a home and away series between division rivals. Therefore 6 of New England’s games are as follows:
Team……………….….Win%
1. Buffalo Bills…………...0.438
2. Miami Dolphins………. 0.063
3. New York Jets………...0.250
4. Buffalo Bills……………0.438
5. Miami Dolphins………..0.063
6. New York Jets………...0.250

Next, each division plays another division within their conference on a rotating basis from one season to the next. In 2007 New England’s division played the AFC North. In 2008 it worked out that New England’s AFC East Division plays another weak AFC division, the AFC West, leaving the AFC South to be played in 2009…
Team……………….….Win%
7. Denver Broncos………..0.438
8. Kansas City Chiefs……..0.250
9. Oakland Raiders………..0.250
10. San Diego Chargers…….0.688

Additionally, each division in one conference plays one of the four-team divisions from the other conference, also on a rotating basis from season to season. In 2006 the AFC East played the NFC North, followed in 2007 by the NFC East. In 2008 it’s the AFC East’s turn to play another weak division, the NFC West, and in 2009 the AFC East will face off against the NFC South…
Team……………….….Win%

11. Arizona Cardinals..…….0.500
12. San Francisco 49ers……0.313
13. Seattle Seahawks………0.625
14. St. Louis Rams…………0.188
Finally, as a division winner in 2007, the Patriots are scheduled to play the division winners that reside in the two divisions the AFC East isn’t scheduled to play in 2008. These games are the reason the new schedules are not announced until the end of the previous regular season.

Therefore:
Team……………….….Win%
15. Indianapolis Colts.……0.813
16. Pittsburgh Steelers…….0.625
Total………………………..6.192
