Cool 49ers name Troy Smith starting QB for week 8

RIP alex smith

News: 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that Troy Smith, not Alex Smith or David Carr, would start vs. the Broncos in the team's Week 8 matchup in London. Singletary likes Troy Smith's leadership and has seen enough from him in practice to give him the nod. Alex Smith has a separated left shoulder injury that's expected to keep him out for as many as three weeks and Carr was ineffective in replacing the injured Smith last Sunday at Carolina. "Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "He has enough of the offense to play."

Analysis: In four years, Smith has completed 48 of 89 passes (53.9 comp. pct.) for 558 yards (6.27 yards per attempt) with three touchdowns, one interception and two lost fumbles. He also has 109 rush yards, two rushing touchdowns and a 36-yard catch to his credit. Smith was someone we liked when he came out of Ohio State back in '07 but he never got a chance to play regularly in Baltimore (two starts as a rookie). If you're desperate for a quarterback, Smith should be able to total a decent amount of yards against a Broncos defense that is healthier but not necessarily as sharp as they've been in the past. He's no better than a No. 2 option, to be sure, but there's some potential here.

I always loved when he got in the game for Baltimore and thought he looked promising. Plus a black QB get a lot more respect in London.

The way I look at it, ANYONE is an upgrade over Alex Smith. For 1 quarter, he can look like a top 10 QB, then for another quarter, he looks like he couldn't play high school football.

At least with Troy Smith, it is something different, he will have something to prove and to show he belongs. Will they win? Perhaps, but at least it is something new, which at this point in the season, it is worth a try.
