Matthews has already introduced swagger to Argos TheStar.com - Football - Matthews has already introduced swagger to Argos
COLIN O'CONNOR/TORONTO STAR
Head coach Don Matthews keeps his eye on his charges at Argos practice on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.

DON'S DEBUTS
Don Matthews is used to debuts – he's had six of them in the CFL:
1983 B.C.: Loss to Toronto, 17-14
1990 Toronto: Loss to Edmonton, 40-34
1991 Saskatchewan:Win over Edmonton, 44-41
1994 Baltimore: Win over Toronto, 28-20
1996 Toronto: Win over Montreal, 27-24
1999 Edmonton: Loss to B.C., 25-13

Retro coach has players feeling better about themselves – but wary

September 12, 2008
Chris Zelkovich
Sports Reporter

Retro is the theme of tonight's football game between the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the blasts from the past won't stop at the '50s vintage jerseys.
Legend Don Matthews is back in his third incarnation Argos' as head coach will almost surely bring a few of his old tricks with him. Also being brought back from the past is something that has been missing the past few seasons: the old Argo swagger.
"He's trying to give us a swagger and quickly," defensive captain Mike O'Shea said yesterday. "That's always been the MO of Don Matthews teams, having a swagger and believing and expecting to win.
"In very short order, I think he's working that into our fabric very quickly."
Veteran centre Chad Folk, who like O'Shea played for the Argos the last time Matthews was in town, also talked about the new attitude that the Don has instilled in his early days on the job.
"Part of it is the confidence he has in himself and his systems," Folk said. "There's sort of a trickle-down effect from him to the coaching staff to the players.
"It's just a culture he creates within an organization."
While instilling a swagger in a team that's 4-6 and is coming off a thumping last Sunday might seem like a monumental task, Matthews appears to have at least created a greater sense of urgency at practice as the team prepares for what is likely a battle for the last playoff spot in the CFL East.
There has been a palpable increase in intensity since the CFL's winningest coach replaced rookie Rich Stubler on Tuesday.
Of course, one reason might be the fear factor. Matthews has said nobody's job is safe and that cuts could come as soon as tomorrow.
"This is like a one-game tryout," O'Shea said.
At least one player apparently didn't even get that. The Argos put defensive back Chuck Winters on the nine-game injury list yesterday, a move that effectively ends the six-year veteran's season and possibly his career.
Asked if Winters, who started Sunday in Montreal, suffered an injury during the game, general manager Adam Rita replied, "He's got a shoulder injury. He's had a chronic shoulder anyway, so we put him on the injury (list.)"
With 10 new players arriving this week, there's a training-camp feel to the crowded Argos locker room and tonight's game will essentially be a tryout for many.
Jonta Woodard, who was cut by Hamilton after Toronto's Labour Day win over the Ticats, will play left tackle because Jerome Davis (torn pectoral muscle) was placed on the injured list.
Also making his Argos debut on the offensive line will be former NFL first-round draft pick Kenyatta Walker.
With Winters out and veteran linebacker Michael Fletcher sidelined with a foot injury, the Argos' defence will take on a new and decidedly younger look. Adding to that youth will be former San Francisco 49er Walter Curry, who will see action on the defensive line.
In his two days back in Toronto, Matthews said his main challenge will be to get more out of his players.
"I'm totally impressed with the talent level they've got here," he said. "Athletically, on the hoof, they look as good as any place I've ever been. Now they have to play at that level."

-11.09 units on the year with 2 plays pending sunday:

a) 2nd half of teaser with NE +8.5 (2.2 to win 2)
b) eagles +7 (3.3 to win 3)

(So much for the new coach angle on the argos as they get smoked and Don Mathews suffers an embaressment for his first game, oh how one game can make a difference, had that hit I would be UP units, instead down a very disappointing -11.09 units going into week # 2)
