Chris Schultz on the WildCard Games

4:30 PM Saturday, January 07, 2012
Cincinnati @ Houston (-3.0) Schultz Picks: Houston:
---------------------------------------------------

These teams met in Week 14 at Cincinnati, and the Texans earned a 20-19 win. Quarterback T.J. Yates threw for 300 yards and was the key reason for the Texans victory. In that game the Bengals' defence did an excellent job on run defence limiting Arian Foster to 2.9 yards per carry. Now, they'll have to show that they can do it again. Receiver Andre Johnson did not play in Week 14, but he'll play this week. That's a critical issue for the Bengals in that you take a big risk over-loading the line of scrimmage and leaving Johnson one-on-one with even your top cornerback. With a Top 5 defence, and a Bengals team that is 0-7 against playoff teams, which accounts for each and every one of their losses, I have to go with logic here. Houston covers the 3 points and moves on to divisional football next week.

Detroit @ New Orleans (-11.0) Schultz Picks: New Orleans:
---------------------------------------------------------

If the Lions can keep it close early, they'll have a chance to win the game at the end, but that's a big if. The only way I see an upset is if the front four of Detroit has a pass rushing performance similar to one the St. Louis Rams had back in Week 8. If you recall, St. Louis won 31-21 because they got to Drew Brees consistently. The Saints this year remind me of the Packers of last year in that they are playing their best football right now. They have won eight in a row heading into the playoffs and in five of those games, they've scored 30 or more points. The Saints beat the Lions in Week 13 by a score of 31-17. I think New Orleans will be relentless and will cover the 11 successfully. Take the Saints.

Atlanta @ NY Giants (-3.0) Schultz Picks: NY Giants:
---------------------------------------------------

The Giants have an advantage in depth in two key areas , running back and the defensive line. At running back, Atlanta is dependent on Michael Turner to control time of possession during the game, while the Giants have two good running backs in with opposite styles in Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs . On the defensive line, the Falcons have a proven pass rusher in John Abraham, while the Giants have three in Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck . Because of their four man pass rush ability, the Giants can play a coverage that limit big plays, while Atanta will have to take risks to get to Eli Manning. Last week the Giants did a good job on Jason Witten, Dez Bryant and Miles Austin of the Cowboys and I think they can do the same with the Falcons trio of Tony Gonzalez, Dez White and Julio Jones. I'm taking the Giants to cover the spread.

Pittsburgh (-9.0) @ Denver Schultz Picks: Pittsburgh:
----------------------------------------------------

I just can't see Denver scoring enough points to win. Last week against the Chiefs, the Broncos had 12 possessions, nine ended up as punts, with one fumble, one interception and one field goal. Now, the Broncos have to face a Steelers defence that only allowed 13.6 points per game during the regular season, which was second in the league to the 49ers. I believe that defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will keep Tim Tebow in the pocket and over time force a key mistake to win the game convincingly. Not having Rashard Mendenhall will be an issue for the Steelers, but not this week. I'm taking the Steelers to cover the 9.
